Descendants of Eli Clark
Eli was in Coshocton County, Ohio and married Elizabeth Curtis Dunlap there on March 31, 1835. They disappeared from the Coshocton census after 1860, and it turned out that Elizabeth had gone to Kosciusko County, Indiana with at least two of her children, John and William; her immediate family was already there. Frederick and Sarah were old enough to be on their own, and there is no evidence Asbury went with her, and he may have died young. There is some confusion, as a child, Ellen, was in one census, with the same age as William, and William was not there. I believe that the census taker misunderstood when the parent said William, and thought it was Ellen.
Assuming that Eli died, we tried everywhere in the area to discover a burial site, with no luck. However, while looking in the 1870 Hanover Township, Licking County census, I discovered him with a new wife, Julia, who had a son Charles Boyer. They operated a grocery in Hanover for a period of time. That section of Hanover was torn down in the construction of the Dillon Flood control project.
In that census and in 1880, Eli's birth place and that of his parents was shown as Virginia. Previous censuses had always been incomplete in the place of birth fields. There has been no success in finding Eli's parents or background. His death record shows his name as Elim, which I assume is a transcription error, but don't know for sure.
There were many Clarks in Coshocton County and surrounds, and it is possible we will find a connection there, with a lot more research.
Eli's oldest son Oren and his wife Elizabeth Jane Westlake, though raised in adjacent Pike Township, Coshocton County, lived in Fallsbury Township, Licking County. We still have not found Sarah, Frederick or Asbury. If you have Eli Clark, born c1814, or his missing children, in your family tree, please let us know!
Research on these Clarks has been a cooperative effort of cousins Laurie Jo Kenville, Gary Clark and myself. Please let us know if you connect with this line. Email us!
