Quotable Quotes

Here are two "quotable quotes" by prominent German non-Jews, stated about the Holocaust. One quote was uttered in 1938 in Germany, the other stated in the year 2000 in Israel.

Martain Niemoeller, Berlin Lutheran pastor arrested by the Gestapo sent to Dachu concentration canp in 1938; the Allied forces freed him seven years later:

"In Germany, The Nazis first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, but I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."

German President Johnannes Rau, who spoke the first German words in Isreal's Knesset in 2000 during a speech in which he asked for forgiveness for Nazi atrocities that killed six million Jews:

"With the people of Isreal watching, I bow in humility before those murdered, before those who don't have graves where I could ask them for forgiveness."
