Marvelous 3 Ready Sex Go (Elektra)

I hate to say it but most rock bands these days don't really rock very hard. Sure, they crank the volume and beat the hell out of the drum kit, but there's still something missing. It's an elusive quality that separates high decibel noise from quality rock music.

Fortunately, Marvelous 3 are firmly planted on the right side of the line. Their bold and beautiful major label debut, Hey! Album, produced the band's first single, "Freak of the Week." The song was impossible to miss. And it was only one of an awesome set of tunes on the record.

After touring the world in support of the single, Marvelous 3 locked down in the studio to write and record their next immortal set of songs— the songs that appear on their 2000 offering, Ready Sex Go.

In a sense, not much has changed. Tracks like the single "Sugarbuzz" take the chorus into the world of the superhook. It's the cornerstone of the M3 aesthetic. That and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. With a perfect melody, Butch (the singer) rants, "I went to a party last Saturday night/ Ya know, I think I got laid and got into a fight/ I don't remember that much but I think I liked it."

Similar stories appear in a number of these rock steady tunes. "Supernatural Blonde" speaks of very dangerous women. And "Grant Park" features a tale of a rock star who discovers his girlfriend in bed with another woman. It's life in the fast lane with Marvelous 3.

Although it's not a recommended lifestyle, it sure inspires full throttle rock songs. Ready Sex Go, takes the adrenaline, heartbreak and alcohol of the rock life and distills it down to thirteen steamin' tracks. So, if you're not quite ready to hit the road with a rock tour, you can always do the next best thing. Spin up the disc and live vicariously through Marvelous 3.
