Desire, Fear, Innocence
Ryan Vaughan

Tap-tap-tapping at your window
tap-tap-tapping at your door
tap-tap-tapping all around you
huddled there on the floor.

Tapping at the window
branches, blown by wind.
Skeletal fingers stretching,
stretching across your pane.

Grandfather in the hall,
the mighty monolith beats out his rhythm
Steady,
   Slowly,
      Deadly.

Mezmerized you sit there, cowering in your fear,
I smell the blood within you for I am very near
trapped within the floorboards, standing in the walls
patiently awaiting,
                  Sensing,
                     Tasting.

Whose breath now stops short?
Whose heart wears thin?
Whose hand clutches vainly at her breasts?
Whose slip is worn too thin?

And now, as the moon's soft light,
pieous in it's grace,
meanders, wandering across your shoulders. . .
My dark resolve stiffens.

And now you look toward me
ghostly white and pale.
Your lips, so lush, soft and full
                                     tremble.
Your eyes, deep and wide and innocent,
                                                         beg.

In this your final hour, and this your last lonely
minute
your inner beauty shines through you
and illuminates the room.

Radiance cast by skin so pale,
    the Teddy Bear is watching.
A deep shadow passes by,
    the Teddy Bear is hoping.
Grandfather in the hall sounds twelve,
    the Teddy Bear is frightened.
The shadow encompasses you,
    The Teddy Bear is helpless.
