O.R.
One day you're sitting in the doctor's office
just talking about a recent problem you've had
or one that's not gone away
you hear them mention surgery, and your head starts to spin
not another one...not the same one...I've had so many already...
but it seems inevitable - this operation is going to happen
the medication is not working anymore
The day comes
you go in on a flat, uncomfortable bed
and hear only the sound of your own heart smashing against your ribcage
like a caged, frightened animal trying to get out
the metal is too shiny
the lights too bright
looking up at the huge round disks staring at you, you feel as though you're a small child,
and every ounce of courage has vanished from your body
you want your mommy, or your teddy bear, you want to wake up and say thank God that was just a nightmare
the doctors are a blur, you don't really hear what they're saying
something about the bed being narrow, we have to strap you in...
you mumble something that you feel a tingle in your veins,
it won't be long nowthey say, then a whispered "goodnight" or "have a nice vacation" and you're gone
