I wrote, or at least attempted to write, my first novel when I was thirteen. I'm not going to say how long ago that was, except to say that, well, it's been a few years, and I'm still writing.
I would like to think that my craft has evolved from manuscript to manuscript, but there are some themes that just keep coming up: adapting to a new reality, growing up, and realizing that sometimes X doesn't equal Y. Oh, and aliens. There are lots of aliens in these books. And sometimes vampires too. And, occasionally, maiming.
TAVI (VERSION 2.0)
Novel, ninety-plus pages long. Written in mid-late 1998. Not a sequel to "Version 1.0". Quasi-retro, the story was placed in 1991 for the random Jesus Jones reference. Tavi is a fourteen year-old alien who moves to Ohio with his father. All he wants is a better life. All he gets is abduction, rape, and maiming. That, and one of U2's best albums. "She moves in mysterious ways..."
ONE NEW BEGINNING
Finished novel, hundred-plus pages long but with wide margins. Written in late 1999. Some aliens have taken over Earth and now it's up to a band of outcasts to take it back. A sex slave, an angel, a half-alien half-human, and others are forced to unite.
This was written by me and an entire mailing list of people. It is the direct product of a role-playing game. But don't worry; I edited out many of the typos. By the way, the characters I invented were Baxter, Viveto, and Darren.
If I'd finished this book, the last alien chapters would have described her moving to Earth, and the last suburban chapters would have shown that she can't run away from her past.
Also, this manuscript is one of my rare experiments with the first-person point-of-view.
JOE LANE
also known as The Weekly National. Unfinished manuscript, fifty-plus pages long. Written in early 1998, one month after "Cai", and under much the same circumstances. Joe Lane is a journalist in the year 2023 whose need to get the scoop often trumps other needs, such as common sense and personal safety. Thus, Joe's tale is one of maiming, hermaprodite aliens, and other bad decisions.
The boredom of study hall was beginning to affect me. Can you tell?
