Paintings

This is the page I have for my paintings. I really don't like painting much, so of course these were fun classes to take. I had never painted with oils before I took these classes, though, so I never would have had the opportunity to realize I disliked them if I hadn't had to take the classes. Not much positive I can really say about the classes. I did like some of the end results though.

"Watercolor of a Nude"

This project was actually pre-Painting 1. I missed a class of Figure Drawing so a couple of friends and I talked a friend into posing for us (She's really wearing a bathing suit). I only felt that two pieces from the session were worth saving, though. The other one is on display on the Drawing Page. I need to get theother one scanned. This is definitely the best watercolor I've ever done. I like the loose quality to it.

"Empire"

This is the second oil painting I did in my life. I think it's my favorite too. We were given bits of the skeleton to paint by our professor. I did her one better and used the black sweater I had worn that day as a backdrop for the piece.

I named it Empire, because the color purple makes me think of royalty, being a regal color. I also thought for the most part, imperialism is dead, as depicted by the skeletal hand reaching across the cloth and the vaguely yellowed tint the piece took on. One of my few attempts at artistic wit early on. Not my forte.

"Cake"

My third encounter with oils. The results of Painting 1 seems far more successful to me then the results of Painting 2. Of course I took them over a year apart from one another. That and being expected to do twice as much work in the same amount of time would do it.

This project consisted of the professor bringing each of us a piece of cake and having us paint it on a plaid piece of cloth. I think I enjoyed workin on this one too, though the perspective is off. That cake was hard as a rock by the end of the week, too.

"A Day at the Beach"

This was the last project for my Painting 1 class. We had to have something with texture (my grandmother's big red sun hat), something made of wood (a piece of wood I found on the sidewalk outside the art building), something metallic (both my mirror sunglasses and a crunched up pop can)and something glass (yes that glass of water. I can't remember whether or not the water was required.). I threw some fabric behind it and my plastic frog, Pepe(he's the Wonder Frog, you know...) into it and painted the setup in the corner of my cubicle. I decided to give it htis name because when I finished up, it looked like it was a a pile of stuff that was left on a beach. I have to say I am proud of this piece because I learned to deal with reflections on glass. It really surprised me that it didn't take very long at all to do.

"Moonlit Blocks"

This is the first project of my illustrious "Painting 2 period." I call it illustrious, because it wasn't. I think the only reason I passed was because I made life interesting. We had a new professor with slightly more conservative tastes on what constituted good painting then the previous class. That and I hadn't painted for almost a year. Anyway, I call this Moonlit Blocks because of the blue tint everything took on. Sadly, it's probably the best piece I did in that class.

"Leg with Bricks"

This was another early painting from Painting 2. We were set in front of a setup on the table with chairs and bricks and other furniture. This is the excerpt of the scene I chose to depict. I really enjoy the soft treatment of the footstool's leg, and it shows in the neglect I showed the bricks, which I felt were unimportant. I did recieve the praise that my " table leg was sexy," though it was from the same girl that asked if I used clipart for my heron in my graphics class. That's ok, though.. she's cool.

"Peppers"

These were the result of an experiment on my part. I was the first person in the class to try painting two paintings of the same subject at the same time. I would hop from one, make a few adjustments, and then hop back over to the other. I have to admit, I do hate painting, but we were heading more toward the surreal stuff that I enjoy, though I haven't quite got the hang of it yet. These two are a series actually. The top one is titled Assasination and was painted from a further perspective then the one below it, which is named Autopsy.

"Jar-full of Air"

This was my last project of the class.. yes there WERE more than 5 paintings, but most of them didn't warrant showing. It was also my favorite painting of the bunch, though my family and I seem to be the only ones claiming to like it. It is, for those who haven't caught on, an empty babyfood jar. I decided I was avoiding true color completely in this one. I enjoy painting glass, if I have to paint, which is why I chose the subject. It took me about half an hour to do, which I suspect has a great deal to do with the fact that it's my favorite.
