Sculpture

These are my sculptures. Most of them are off somewhere in storage. I still have most of them in one form or another. There's at least one more piece I need to scan pictures of and place here. There are probably more. Anyway, enjoy!

"Devil Frog"

This piece goes all the way back to Winter quarter of my freshman year, when I had Studio Foundations 2. We had to make a working costume using industrial scraps. I used pieces from a company named Associated Plastics in Ada, Ohio. I call this piece Devil Frog, because it was such a royal pain to get to work. But then, when is anything ever really easy? This is a rare piece of pre-fire work that still exists. On the bright side, it's now rusting in my back yard...

I think I have another picture of me actually wearing it somewhere that I should try and scan.

"06-01-97"

This piece is a result of Sculpture I, taken Winter of my Sophomore year. My mission: Illustrate some kind of conflict in an abstract manner, using as much of one sheet of plywood as humanly possible. The previous summer, my somewhat comfortable little life had been shattered by a fire that claimed the home I had spent the past nineteen years living in. It also claimed the lives of our two cats, one of whom, Tom, whom I grew up with, and would have chosen over most people should lives have been on the line. This of course, stood out in my mind as the obvious conflict I should depict.

Anyone who has gone through this situation has my deepest condolences, as this still affects me a lot, even three years later. No one should have to go through it. But sometimes life doesn't listen.

Obviously the green represents my somewhat stable life before the fire. The red, which strikes out and shatters the green, represents the fire. Simple and effective. I was told by someone I respect a lot that this was spoonfeeding a bit, but I don't feel the situation was exactly a subtle one and she didn't know the backstory either, so it's no big deal really.

"Walnuts"

I did this peice in Sculpture 2, in Winter of my Senior year. Our project was to find a small object that can fit in your pocket and, using molds we made from clay models, create at least 8 large versions of said object which would then be arranged into an interesting negative shape.

The quest begins with me at a loss... what kind of tiny thing could I use? Then I went home for Christmas break. My dad always gets walnuts around Christmas (don't as me why... I don't like nuts). Noticing the small size, I took it upon myself to "yoink" one.

Ill-gotten walnut in my pocket, I returned to school, eager as always to get to my classes. The rest is pretty much history.

While I didn't like the project at the time (I hate having dry skin), this is a rare case where I did enjoy the product that came of it. These are the images I have of it.
