This is a review page from Yours Truly. I do love books so much I think that dedicating a page to them is so little to pay the great authors back for their contibution to this twisted world. They help bring the world (and in some cases other worlds) into understanding and view. Books can take us to the magnetic north pole and to the islands of a far off world not yet discovered. Yes, this is for those lovely people who spend hours upon end spilling their minds into paper for us to enjoy. Here are my very favorite books and about them.
...Sabriel by Garth Nix... The picture is my opening picture (but my glasses aren't on the cover...). This is perhaps my favorite book of all time. It has fantasy, action, a little romance, and much science fiction in it. You can always tell a good book if it has a map, and this one's map is located on page 2. Sabriel takes place partly in Ancelstierre and then you cross The Wall into The Old Kingdom, full of mystery and sorcerey. You meet Sabriel while she is studying Magic in Wyverley which is a type of bording school. She gets an urgent call from her Father, the Abhorsen, a master in Magic. Fall into the magic of Charter and Necromancy with this mystical book that will wrap you in it's world.
...Shade's Children by Garth Nix...
As Nix's second
book I think that this one is better formed, but more
science fiction, much more. In this book it's really hard
to tell who is good and who is bad. You know, I think that
people naturally label Good Guy / Bad Guy as soon as they
pick up a book, but Nix definatly gears you toward trusting
no one in this book. The book takes place in the future,
but I don't know if it's the imediate future or further down
the road. People are running the world with robots. Humans,
humans above the teen years are only in story books, but
seeing a story book or even a picture of an adult is rare and
forbidden. Everything is computers, laboratories. They put
all kids in dorms. The strong are taken to the Training Grounds
where they get lots of exercise, food, and many drugs. Steroids.
When you're fourteen they take your brain and your muscles and
put them in robots named Myrmidons. Everyone has tracers
that tell the robots where you are. Some cut out tracers,
others take them out with their minds...You run into a place
where the gifted children run to. They see it or they get
rescued and taken there, where they meet Shade, whom no one
knows much about. He's feared, he's loved, they are weary
of him, yet he is all they have. This book is all over the place,
yet ties into itself in the end. A very interesting experiance when
you read it. You'll be sorry when it ends.
...Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander...
Time Cat is a book by a fantastic fantasy author! Infact,
he gave Sabriel a review...just a little fact for ye all.
Okay, Time Cat is about...a cat! WOAH!! Just kidding, yes it
is about a cat, a cat and his boy that travel through time
(the title's a bit explanitory isn't it?). But the catch is,
the boy and cat almost die several times and the cat is magic.
The really cool thing about this book is that Alexander
describes things so vividly you can really picture that you're there.
Here, I'll type the first paragraph of the book...
"Gareth was a black cat with orange eyes. Sometimes, when
he hunched his shoulders and put down his ears he looked
like an owl. When he stretched he looked like a trickle of
black oil or a pair of black silk pajamas. When he sat on
a window ledge, his eyes half-shut and his tail curled
around him, he looked like a secret." And this cat indeed does have a secret.
...Countdown seires by Daniel Parker...
No, Countdown is not about a shuttle launch. Far from it.
First off, enjoy your parents. Because on January 1, 1999,
they are gone (ya ya, your mum is probably in the other room,
give me a break!). They ooze into puddles of black tar
and blood, leaving only behind their memories. Everyone
above 21 is melted, including the younger kids. All that's
left is teen-agers (a very scary thought!). You've got
Sarah, Ariel, Harold, George, Julia, Brian, and Josh, seven
visionaries, one of them being the Chosen One. These visionaries
are susposed to lead the people to the promise land, to the
Chosen One. But we're talking teenagers here! Teens, when
have we ever done exactly what we're susposed to do? Never,
duh! Hell, the Chosen One doesn't even know who he/she is!
So the plot is twisted with an anchient scroll from Isrial,
plague after plague, The Demon, Skin Tight: The Unauthorized
History of Erotic Film, visionaries, beer, drugs, and spiced
with Naamah who is so damn annoying you'll wanna strangle her!
Parker puts the books out monthly so now January through July is
out. They are a great series and you should DEFINATLY read them!
...Left Behind series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye...
Left Behind is a series that's also about the world ending
but from a very religious view. I'm not very religious at all
but this book is very interesting. It's about the Rapture,
the Second Coming of Christ. In a book in the Bible it
says that Jesus will return to earth to take his followers
to Heaven. Then there will be a deal signed in Isrial by the Antichrist and
then the 7 years of Tribulation will begin where alot of
people will die. So the four books will explain how the
people disappear, what the kids do (the books focus on four teens),
who the Antichrist is, and what the kids decide to do. This series
is finished, but I read the Kids series. There's also an
adult series that's about the same thing, but from the adult's
perspective. It's an intersting and exciting series that I
recomend for anyone.
...Danger.Com series by Jordan Cray...
Ahhh, books filled with computers and terrorism. It was like
love at first sight for me. What I really like about this
series is that they are all about computers, they are
all about a murder or some weirdo trying to take over the world,
and they aren't a series that you have to read in order.
The books are only connected by the fact that they are about computers,
none of the charecters are the same, except in book 3 (Shadow Man)
and book 8 (Dead Man's Hand). They are both about Annie Hanley and
her stepbrother Nick Annunciato. But still, you wouldn't have
to read them in order either. Anyways, the picture of the
Danger.Com book that I choose was the one of the second book,
Firestorm, simply because it's my favorite. It has to do
with bombs, Driver's Ed, a werid chat room, and Johnny Tremain.
It's a really awesome series and you should check it out when
you're in the mood for adventure!
