Doug's Nascar Update

WELCOME TO Doug's Nascar "99 Update!!!

The 1999 Diehard 500 from Talladega Superspeedway is complete and there is only one thing to say.

The Man! The Intimidator! Dale! Dale Earnhardt!!!!

The Intimidator dominated the race from start to finish and led the most laps on the way to win number one for 1999 and win number 73 overall. No one had anything for him at the end, not even my boy Bobby Labonte, who was consistent and solid throughout the race. Some nice surprises today also from Jerry Nadeau and a strong run by Michael Waltrip. Michael is way overdue and today looked like his best chance yet.

The big question today: WHAT THE HECK WAS SKINNER THINKING ABOUT??? Even crew chief Larry McReynolds was wondering in his post-crash interview. It's one thing to block, but to run into the grass? NASCAR called him to the trailer after the race, but no idea yet what the outcome is. Interesting to note that while teammates did not help each other today at RCR, Skinner and Earnhardt are tied for 9th in the season points.

Also important to note that rookie Tony Stewart finished well and moved to 7th in the overall points. Very impressive, but then what do you expect from Joe Gibbs racing!

Much as I absolutely hate to do it...gotta give credit to what's-his-name (#24) for not whinning or complaining or blaming someone else in his post crash interview. Good for you....uh.....Geoff? ... I mean Jeff... whatever!

Exciting Busch series action on Saturday. I keep telling you, Saturday is where it's at! Terry Labonte wins by 0.002 seconds over Joe Nemechek. Dale, Jr. takes the points lead from Elton (never to be heard from again this season) Sawyer and leads Kenseth by 100 points. My boy Casey Atwood showed real patience, skill, and class for another top 10 finish, and this his first appearance at Talladega. Atwood assumes 6th in the points...and he's still only 18 years old!!! Heck of a wreck...I predicted it about 2 laps earlier telling Paprika that if Kelly Denton didn't move aside there would be trouble. And, sure enough...just ask Schrader.

Heading to California next Sunday...probably the single most BORING venue on the circuit. A clone of Michigan with even wider turns. Nice showoff for the sponsors, not much of a race for the fans. A good one to catch on MRN while you enjoy the outdoors.

COUNTYLINE MOTORSPORTS: Countyline Motorsports maintains 8th place going into Taladega, anxious to see how we faied the restrictor plate weekend.
