Chapter 16

“So, when were you planning on telling me that you’re leaving Friday?” Isaac walks up behind you in the kitchen, demanding an answer to his question.

You turn around and lean your back against the counter. “I don’t know. I just kept thinking that if I didn’t tell you, the longer it would seem that I had to be with you. It was like pushing it out of my head. But it’s so real now. I only have a few more days here.” You turn back around to finish fixing your ice cream.

He walks up behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist and resting his chin on your shoulder. A chill ran down your spine.

“Are you sure your okay with dinner tomorrow night?” You ask him, knowing that you would love to spend the time with just him instead.

“Of course I am. He’s your father and....” before he can finish his sentence, you turn around and stick a spoon of ice cream in his mouth. He smiles at you and you walk into the living room, Isaac following behind you.

“You have plans Thursday night?” You question him.Thursday would be the last night the two of you had to spend together.

“Well.... we have practice till 4:00 PM and then we have to be at KHITZ by 5:00 for an interview and I guess a few songs. Why?”

“I was just hoping we could do something, you know, just us.” You lean your head against his shoulder.

“We have now,” he suggests.Picking your head up, you look into his big brown eyes, arching your eyebrows as if to ask him “what-can-we-do-at-this-time-of-night?”

He stands up, offering his hand to you. “C’mon, let’s go for a walk.”

Taking his hand, he guides you outside, to that same tree where he had asked you to be his.You smile to yourself, noticing the million stars in the sky.A song starts to play from the radio he had by the tree.”Remember this?” He asks you.You nod “yes,” it was the song he had played for you. “May I have this dance?” You walk up closer to him, wrapping your arms around his neck.

“Ah.... I see you finished the song,” you rest your head against his chest. He takes one of your hands and places it over his racing heart. You smile to yourself under the stars.

“Of course I did. After you left Tulsa last summer, this was all I worked on. It’s your song. I never thought I would be able to play for you ever again, never imagined I’d see you again. And now, you’ll be leaving again. I really don’t want you to go. I can’t imagine living without you.”

“Please, don’t say your goodbyes now. We still have plenty of time together.” You look into his eyes, with a tear streaming down your face. He smiles and wipes it away. He then lightly kisses your lips.

The two of you continue swaying in the moonlight, even after the song has ended.
