Persidia

© 1997 by Daniel R. Miller

Welcome to Persidia. The story takes place on a small, cold, rocky world where the inhabitants live in underground caverns. The planet gives off no heat of its own, and is too far from its sun to be warmed enough for life to survive naturally.

For millenia the people of Persidia have lived by mining coal and using it to fuel a central furnace in one of the largest caverns. A great city was built around the furnace, and the Persidians built a comfortable life for themselves. Then, about fifty years ago the planet's natural resources began to dwindle.

One intelligent young man proposed a new furnace of his own design, which was powered by a mysterious, incomprehensible source. The desperate citizens of Persidia were willing to try his plan, and so they built his Perpetual Furnace. The new machine was a success, and the inventor, Xerxes, was considered a hero.

Alas, Xerxes was the only one who fully understood the workings of the Furnace, and this was indeed powerful knowledge. Over time, his power corrupted him, and he soon ruled by the threat of leaving his furnace unsupervised, which the people could not run without him. They had to listen to his commands, or freeze.

In this game, you will play the part of a young Persidian living in the dicatorship of Xerxes. You are one of thousands of menial spore farmers. You are about to find that you've become an outcast from society, and your job will be to organize a rebellion against Xerxes to restore freedom to your planet.

This will be no small task, but millions are counting on you.
Good luck!
