Gothic Lace Bookmark

Materials:  White size 10 thread, size 6 crochet hook.

Gauge:  Unimportant.

Center: Ch 8, join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 3 (1st dc formed) dc in ring, ch 3 (2 dc, ch 3) 7x, join w/sl st to top of first ch 3, do not turn.

Row 2:  Ch 3, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in first ch 2 sp.  Skip next dc, dc in next dc, turn.  Mark front of row 2 as right side.

Row 3:  Ch 3, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in top of ch 3 on previous row, turn.

Rows 4-20:  Repeat row 3.  At end of row 20, do not turn, fasten off.

Edging:

Rnd 1:  Hold bookmark with right side facing.  Join thread with sc in 1st ch 3 space (next to ch 3 sp where row 2 is worked).  In the end of row 2 of center work *dc, ch 2, tr, ch 2, dc* (skip next row, in end of next row work *-*)9x, hdc in top of first dc of row 20, work 11 dc in ch 2 space of row 20, hdc in top of last dc of row 20.  Repeat (-)10x.  Sc in 1st ch 3 sp (ch 3, sc in next ch 3 sp)5x, ch 3, join w/sl st to top of 1st sc.

Rnd 2:  Ch 1, sc in same st and in next st (*2 sc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, hdc in top of tr, ch 1, 2 sc in next ch 2 sp*, sc between next 2 dc of previous rnd) 9x, repeat between *-* once.  Sc in 1st dc of 11 dc, sk next dc, hdc in next dc, sm picot, ch 1, hdc in same st, sk next dc, dc in next dc, sm picot, ch 1, dc in same st, sm picot, dc in next dc, sm picot, dc in next dc, sm picot, dc in same st, sk next dc, hdc in next dc, sm picot, hdc in same st, dk next dc, sc in next dc, repeat between (-) 10x, sc in next sc, ch 2, sc in 1st ch 3 sp, ch 4 (sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 4) 4x, sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 2, sl st in 1st sc.

Rnd 3:  Ch 3, sc in hdc, ch 3, sc in same st ( ch 2, sm picot, lg picot, sm picot, sl st in same st as 1st picot, ch 2, sc in next hdc, ch 3, sc in same st) 9x.  Ch 3, sk next 3 sc, sc in next sc, ch 5, sc in between next hdc and next dc, ch 5, sk next dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 1, sm picot, lg picot, sm picot, ch 1, dc in same st, ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 5, sc in next dc, ch 5, sc between next dc and hdc, ch 5, sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in next hdc, ch 3, sc in same st, repeat (-) 9x.  Ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in ch 2 sp, *sk next sc, in next ch 4 sp work 2 sc, sm picot, 2 sc * repeat 4 times more, 2 sc in next ch sp, sl st in next sl st, fasten off.

Hide threads.  If you want it to lay perfectly flat, it will need to be lightly starched when you block it.  The bookmark may be lengthened by additional repeats of the center in multiples of 2 (ie 2-4-6), for each 2 rows you add you will need to add one additional point repeat on the edging.

P.S.  When I send this out, I usually cover round one of the center with a thread motif...a daffodil, rose, a pumpkin...some sort of seasonal little thing.
