Hunter Reborn

This story takes place about half a year after "Hunter’s Moon". There are flashbacks, but only to give the ignorant Gargoyle’s fan a little background on the Hunters. I totally ignored the TCG plot-line, and all that good stuff that went along with it. Read and enjoy.

I awoke with a start. Cold sweat ran down the back of my neck. Sitting up, Irealized that the sheets were clinging to my sweat-soaked body. I shook my head and told myself to calm down. This wasn't the first night that I'd woken up in a cold sweat. Ever since a few weeks ago, when everything began to change.
* * * *
"Jon! Jon!" I call to my brother, who’s munching on an apple, and staring blankly at the ceiling.
"Wha' is i' this time, sister?"
"Oh nothin', only tha' we're comin' up on New York." He gets up and rushes to his station. I lean back in my chair with a smug grin on my face. Looking out the front windshield of the hovercraft I notice how large the city of Manhattan was. It wouldn't be that hard to find what we’re looking for. How many gargoyles can be in one city anyway? After all, the last clan was smashed by my ancestors, save one.
"Robyn, Jon, any sign 'a 'em yet?"
"Negative, brother." As if on cue, a lone gargoyle flew across the front of the hovercraft.
"Tis tha Demon!" Without delay, Jason took control of the hovercraft.
"Slow down! Yaer goin' ta get us all killed!" I stand up and walk to the back of the control room cautiously. Already in my suit, all I needed was my rifle. I pick it up and check to make sure that was in working order. Hitting the charge button I mumble to myself, "This is goin' ta be a long night."
Interrupted from my thoughts by the should of a battle cry, I turn around swiftly. We land on a rooftop somewhere on the outskirts of town. There were three gargoyles, not one. There could be more, many more. I didn't want to think about that now. I got out of the hovercraft with my brothers.
The big one seemed to be giving orders, and the Demon was with him, and the old was there as well. Suprisingly enough, he fights as well as he would have if he was back in Scotland. If it's one thing I've learned from being a hunter, never underestimate any opponent.
They retreat after we got the Demon. I sank into my chair in the cockpit. "Finally it ends."
"Nae, sister. Tha' was not tha Demon." Jason then left me and my brother alone in the cockpit.
Taking off, I face Jon. "I'm nae too sure about 'im, Jason. 'e's nae thinkin' clearly. Sometimes I wonder...."
Jon shakes his head in agreement, "Yae shouldn't doubt yaer own kin, but I agree with ya."
* * * *
I crawled out of bed and looked over the pictures on my dresser. Jon, Jason, and me when we were little, before all this ever happened. How I miss those days. I used toidolize my father, until the accident. The next picture contained me and my father.
I picked it up and looked at it, remembering. My face contorting into a sneer, I hurled the picture at the wall and sank to the floor sobbing.
* * * *
"Yes, Ms. Destine," I address my new boss. Dominique Destine, not like a boss you would expect in this type of city. She takes what she wants and doesn't accept no for an answer. Yet, she's very supportive of her employees. There's something I can't quite place about her though. I've made up my mind not to trust her, but try to be as discrete as possible.
Sunset over Manhattan. Time to go back to work. My real work, quest is more like it. Packing up my briefcase and sorting through the enormous stack of papers on my desk, I leave to go 'home'. If you can call it that.
Days pass, weeks maybe. Time has no meaning in the business that I'm in. Only Hunter’s Moon. Doubts of my brother are more frequent then they used to be. No matter. Nothing matters tonight except the hunt. Finally, we get our revenge.
So many people have come to watch. I wonder why. There can't be anything this exciting to watch. We're going to go in there and make it as fast as possible. At least I hope.
I file out of the hovercraft after my two brothers. This is what I had hope not to face, the other gargoyles that we had taken prisoner a few nights before. We should have never hurt the big one's daughter. Then maybe we'd have some help against Her. The plan would've worked. We could've killed them when they trusted us! It would've been so simple. Too late for that now.
Shots fired, pillars used as weapons. Then a scream.
I look back and forth from Jon to Jason. Sobbing, I kneel next to Jason. "Oh Jason. Just hold on, you'll be all right, just hold on."
"What have I done.... what... what have THEY done! They'll pay for this," Jon declares with fire in his eyes.
Looking up at my brother, with what little voice I have left, "It's over, Jon." Then, he left. Just took off, just like that.
* * * *
I curled into a ball on my floor, not caring that my feet were being pricked by shards of broken glass. I cried myself to sleep for the third time that week.
Again, I was awoken from my sleep with a start. I wasn't sweating this time, but someone was knocking on my door. I stood up and shuffled over to the door, without checking how I look at all, figuring I look like a total mess. I unbolted my apartment door and looked into the face of Matt Bluestone.
I smiled. "Hi Matt. It's been a while," I was getting better at talking without my accent.
"You all right? You don't look so good." He looked me over and stopped at my feet. "You're bleeding." Taking my hand, he dragged me into my apartment.
"Wait! It's nothing. I can take care of it." He sat me down on the couch. I covered my face with one hand. "All right, what's the real reason you came over here?"
He sat down next to me. "It's about your brother."
I replied almost immediately, "What happened to Jason!?"
"No, no, no. You're other brother."
"Jon? Where is he? What happened?" A million things came into my mind. He could've been hurt or worse.
"He's fine, don't worry about it. He just, crawled out from the rock he was under." He smiled. That's one thing I've always like about Matt, he hardly ever sees the glass half empty.
I tried to smile, but the effort was ill-founded. "So what is it?"
The smile on his face faded. "He's after the gargoyles again."
"He what?!" I couldn't believe it. Didn't he learn his lesson? Jason was nearly killed last time. Jason had is mind so set on exterminating the gargoyles, and he changed. But Jon, he never wanted to hunt them with the passion that Jason and I had. He never wanted what we did. And he can't forget. Can't forgive.
I sighed. "So what happened?" He went on to explain that he was seen at the Aerie building last night. He fought with Brooklynn, and before anyone else could get to him, he was gone.
"And you're sure it was Jon?" I asked. I hoped that there could've been doubt in what he said.
He nodded. "We're sure."
I leaned back against the couch and sighed. More talking to myself than Matt I murmured, "How could he.." Matt gave me a puzzled look. "Anyway, do you have any idea what his intentions are? I have a pretty good idea, but there's always something with Jon."
"We don't have much to go on, all we know is that he wants to get rid of the gargoyles and Demona."
"Thanks, Matt. I think I know where to find him." I stood up and lead Matt towards the door.
"Wait, what about your foot?"
"I'll take care of it, don't worry." His reply was cut off by the door. Leaning against it, I lowered myself to the floor. I cursed my brother over and over again. How dare he return to the life that we abandoned months ago.
That evening, a gargoyle perched outside my window. Their second in command, Brooklynn. I opened my window, startled. "Wh.... what do you want?"
He crawled through my window, and caped his wings. "Your help, Hunter." His anger was not easily hid.
I looked him over to see if he was sincere. He was, surprisingly. "What will you have me do?"
"Hunt your brother," he said calmly. Plain and simple. That’s all he wanted.
I stared blankly at the gargoyle in front of me. "How can you ask me to do that! My own kin?" I turned around to face the wall. "I can’t."
"Your family has hunted my kind for over one thousand years, and you can’t hunt someone for a few nights?"
"But he’s my brother! Would you hunt Goliath if someone simply asked you?" He remained silent.
I sighed. "Leave. I’ll think about it." He nodded, and left.
* * * *
Walking into the Aerie building I murmured, "I can’t believe I’m doing this." I met Owen Burnett at the front door.
"Good evening, Ms. Canmore."
"Hey Owen, where can I find Brooklynn?"
"He’s out on patrol, if I’m not mistaken."
"Damn, all right, thanks." I walked back to my car. I’ll have to get the hovercraft, again. I shuddered. Putting the car in gear, I headed towards the dam.
Taking out the remote control, I pressed a button, making the hovercraft emerge from the water. "It’s been a long time.." I climbed into the cockpit and headed for Manhattan.
It’s not that hard to find a gargoyle when all of your controls are geared to finding gargoyles. There was a thud at the rear of the hovercraft. Great, I was hoping to avoid this, but if they want to play rough, let’s get rough.
I grabbed my laser rifle off the wall and jumped down one level, so I was face to face with Brooklynn and Goliath.
I trained my rifle on Goliath. "So nice o’ yae ta drop by withou’ an appointment." I turned my attention to Brooklynn." I’m goin’ ta help yae, even if ‘e is m’ brother."
Goliath and Brooklynn exchanged nervous glances. "Brooklynn, what’s she talking about?"
"I asked for her help with Jon. She knows him the best doesn’t she?" Brooklynn looked up at Goliath hopefully. Goliath nodded.
"Now ge’ off m’ hovercraft so I can tie up loose ends fer yae."
They left the same way they came in, through the wall. I climbed back upstairs intothe cockpit. I began by looking up files by picture identification. There’s no way I could’ve relied on names, we all changed ours for working purposes.
I propped my feet up on the dashboard of the hovercraft. I flew in a holding pattern around the city, waiting for my search to be complete. *beep* *beep* *beep* I checked the computer. Finally, after three long hours, a match.
He now lived at 995 Lexington Ave. apartment 5A. I smirked. I’d visit my brother tomorrow morning and try to talk him out of it. It was the least I could do. I doubted it would work, but he’s my brother.
I headed back to the dam, and put the hovercraft back underwater and went home. Getting a shower, I retreated to my room. I set my alarm for 9. The sixth day I’d be running on about 4 hours of sleep. At least tomorrow was Saturday.
9 am came all too soon. I threw my pillow at the alarm and climbed out of bed. I pulled on jeans and a T-shirt and headed out.
995 Lexington Ave, not exactly the Ritz, but livable. I walked up to apartment 5A and knocked. My brother answered the door.
"Robyn!" He took a step towards me and held his arms out. I stepped around him and into his apartment.
Looking bewildered, he shut the door behind me. His apartment was littered with newspaper clippings and various weapons. I picked up a clipping. Gargoyles. I turned to face my brother.
"Still at it, brother?"
"Tha hunt in’t over, sister. Tha Demon is still out there. So I’ all ‘er evil race. They must pay fer wha’ they did ta Jason."
"Yaer tha one tha’ shot ‘im, Jon! Yae did!"
"No! They made me do it! ‘e would still be walkin’ if nae fer them!"
I glared at him. " ‘e’d still be walkin’ if we ‘ad given up tha hunt when Da’ died." I shook my head. "Din’t yae learn?" I demanded. He remained silent.
"Jon, give it up. There’s been ‘nough death."
"No. Not till tha Demon dies."
"So be it." I turned and walked out of the apartment.
Sunset over Manhattan. Hunter’s Moon. I looked up at the sky. So clear, so cold, so frighteningly familiar. I waited for the gargoyles to awaken from their stone sleep. Wearing my armor, I sat down and waited. Jon would wait till nightfall. At least he gave them a fighting chance.
I stood up as a small hovercraft came into view. "Jon," I murmured. As if on cue, the gargoyles emerged from their sleep. A deafening crack sounded over Manhattan.
I trained a laser cannon at the craft. Jon emerged on a hoverscooter, in full battle armor. He was ready as I anticipated. "So it comes down ta this, eih brother?"
"Yae sided wit ‘em?" His eyes were ablaze with rage.
"I want no more killin’, brother. On either side." I looked to my left and right, the gargoyles were standing in fighting stance.
Looking to my brother I nodded. I turned to Goliath and shot him point-blank in the chest. "Never trust a hunter." I shot Lexington in the arm.
Leaping up onto the top parapet, I rained laser fire down on the gargoyles below. Hudson charged, and was easily dodged.
"Yaer too old ta fight, beast. Give up now, an’ no one gets hurt," Jon proclaimed.
"Tha damage ‘as already been done, hunter!" Hudson roared and attacked Jon.
"Jon!" He fell off his hoverscooter. His scream was the last sound I heard.
I fell to my knees. "Oh Jon." I held my head in my hands. A stray tear escaped from the corner of my eye.
Angela picked me up by my arms and held me over the edge of the castle. Her eyes blazed a bright crimson. She looked at her father and threw me against the castle wall.
I hit with a sharp thud, then a crack. Everything played in front of me in slow motion. Watching father and daughter I realized why I hadn’t hunted in almost a year. Gargoyles could feel too. I smiled.
As my head hit the floor, everything went black.
