The Mustang II was an innovative idea. During the mid 70's, the automobile world was drastically changing. Ford decided that it did not want to have another Thunderbird on its hands so the Mustang was totally redesigned.

There were several different concepts to the Mustang, including the likes of the Pinto! Thankfully the Pinto body style went on to stake its own claim to fame in the automobile world. This was a major project for Ford, the redesigning process started in 1971!!!

The totally redesigned Mustang proved to be a lucritive move by Ford, especially when the oil crisis hit during the mid 70's which forced the general public to search the car market for a car that had good gas mileage as well as class. Hence the Mustang II!!!

In 1975, the Mustang got the option of a 302 V-8 engine. The performance of the 302 V-8 bosted a rating of around 120 horsepower. Considering the Mustangs of the past, the 302 was a dog, but the light weight of the New Mustang made up for the lack of power that the new generation Ford was producing. The light weight of the Mustang also proved to be a beneficial factor in the way it handled the road.

BUT IT GETS BETTER!

In 1976, the horsepower of that 302 was increased to 139HP! This power plant was to make its debut under the hood of a new option package, the Cobra II. The Cobra II was a hatchback Mustang with traditional racing stripes down the center of the car, "Cobra II" stripe on the bottom of the doors, front and rear spoilers, a non-funtional hood scoop, and other various trim work. The tradition of the Cobra II raved on into 1978. Even though the striping had changed from the Cobra II's of the previous years, the car was still the thunderous Cobra II. The new stripes consisted of a single wide stripe down the center of the car and a single stripe on each side of the car that had "Cobra" on it. I think Ford saw that this striping package was not the calibre of the past Cobra's so to compensate, the King Cobra was introduced.

The King Cobra was a basic Cobra II with air dams and stripes added to it. The biggest change was the monsterous front spolier. The spoiler gave the King Cobra a "beefy" look and you would've expected the car to come to life at any point in time and strike its prey...usually Camaro's. There wasn't any real performance upgrade but the King Cobra was a gorgeous car that proves to remain to be one of the most sought after Cobras of that era. With under 5000 Kings produced, what can you expect?.
