    Papa Roach Reviews

    CDNow.Com Reveiw
    by: Paul Semel - 7/14/00:

Amid all this talk of rap-rock hybrids, one very large fact has gone unnoticed: Most of them have no rap. Sure, Korn's bassist Fieldy may claim, "I was born straight hip-hop," but his band sure wasn't.

Those looking for the real thing need not fret, though, as Papa Roach is a rock band with real hip-hop influences. Granted, most of them come in the way Coby raps the verses instead of sings them, but that's still more than most. As for the music, Papa Roach is straight hard rock with a slight punk abandon and a lot of drama, kind of like Alice in Chains with less of a Sabbath sound. It's a true hybrid that works best when Coby's lyrics get introspective ("Broken Home," "Binge," "Never Enough"), which they do often on this rather impressive debut.
