Onward

"Once upon a time..." he writes as tears stain the pages
Another day in another way, passing through the stages
Maybe in another world, another place, another time
When all is right and good and fine
We'd be holding hands again

"My love for you will never pass..." he writes as fists curl
And throws the chair out from under him to face a brand new world
Maybe the time just wasn't right, not for now, not for us
When what's done is gone and over and lost
Maybe we'll again be friends

But for now I face another day, a brighter sun, a newer blue
And start myself along the way down the path of a new beginning
No possessions to tote along, just my overloaded conscience
A resting place I seek to find, while my thoughts are still with you

"I never knew just how to say…"and another sheet of paper wasted
One more day of "what ifs" and "what could haves", a sample of what he's tasted
I feel compelled to say that in some way, had there been just one more day
For you to listen and for me to say
I could be still be holding your hand

"I never knew I could feel so good..." he tries for one more verse
But ends the phrase with a teary gaze only feeling worse
Staring back at the door where he'll stand no more and will never return again
He points his gaze to ground and faces another round but this time without his friend
And from this point on alone

So for now I face another day, is it a brighter sun, a softer blue?
I must start my way along down the path of a new beginning
With empty hands and empty pockets, tired hands and a heavy conscience
In my resting place I'll hide, and in myself confide, until my thoughts are void of you
