Just Inches Away

Go ahead and run as far and as fast as you can
It’s so much easier than standing up to me
You think you were dealt a losing hand but how would you know if your back is
always turned towards it
I have reached out for you but you were always just inches from my fingertips
Far enough to for me to watch you fall but not close enough for me to catch you
But after a while I will make no attempts to help
I have given more than I can stand to give
Shed too many tears for you and your concerns
I have wiped my hands clean of the stains your demands have left
Yet some residue remains and I am still not completely free from you
When will it stop?
When will you understand that everyone has problems of his or her own?
That you are not alone?
We weren’t meant to agree on everything
That is what makes us all human and different
That is why we have juries of twelve and not of one
But you won’t see that and you won’t let me help
I must stop reaching out and trying to
I can’t stop caring and never will as long as you choose to remain just inches away
