Anytown

I was drifting to sleep when it came to me
This paragon of beauty and peace
A tranquility that held my hand until I dreamed of a utopian society of smiling faces
I awoke refreshed but only for a short lived moment
The morning sun reached through my window
and reminded me of this world we share
A world in a hurry to go nowhere
I walk the paved curbs of Anytown
studying the panic in the frowns of the masses
Eyes fixed on quartz movements and taxi fares
Why not find sanctuary in a dialogue with a stranger?
I feel the tension in the cubicles of this corporation
Heart rates climbing and pulses pounding
There is a world that seems to have been forgotten about
The dandelion that grows between the cracks in the sidewalk
Neighbors exchange a nod as the garage door closes
Solitude preferred to solidarity
Nameless neighbors wave as they reach for the morning paper and fix themselves on caffeine and printed drama

A lonely soul watches the pedestrians cross below her high rise window wondering when that glance will turn to a conversation
When the cab sharing fare will smile back
When the American machine will become human again
I wonder where that window is
I want to walk below that pane of glass and wave and shout up at her at the top of my lungs, “Hello!”
I want to talk and smile and laugh and be a friend
and hope that someday everyone can realize that we are not puppets to time
For now I pull my blanket up over my shoulders and stare through the darkness
while a symphony plays softly in the background to soothe my psyche
I shut my eyes and slowly drift to sleep again as that peace grabs hold of my hand again
…and I walk the utopian streets of Anytown
