The Collector

Baseball card collecting has been
one of the most popular and financially rewarding
hobbies among sports enthusiasts for over a
century. Well over 100 years ago, Goodwin &
Company, maker of Old Judge and Gypsy Queen
cigarette brands became the first printing company
to produce baseball cards as a form of marketing
their products. Each card featured an illustrated
likeness of the game's most popular players with an
advertisement for tobacco on the back. The earliest
baseball cards were small by today's standards
(1-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches) and were printed on a thick
cardboard stock. The Old Judge picture cards were
issued from 1886 to 1890 and more than 2000
different baseball cards from that set have been
rediscovered and cataloged. Goodwin's success led
other tobacco companies to issue sets of their own,
and by 1909, the American Tobacco Company was
manufacturing cards including the T-206 set with
the infamous Honus Wagner. Years later, the Topps
Company was founded and continued to dominated the
"bubble gum card" industry for years until it lost
an anti-monopoly lawsuit in 1980 opening the door
for other distributors such as Fleer and Donruss.
Recently, newer companies like Score, Upper Deck,
and Pacific have joined their predecessors in using
the latest printing and graphic technology to
produce high-tech sports cards that even
incorporate game-used materials. Today, baseball
card collecting has grown into a multi-million
dollar industry and with the introduction of the
Internet; fans can now buy or trade online allowing
them to build their collections at an astounding
pace.
