Harlequin DeV’ris

  • 'ey kid, what's yer name?
Marrel DeV’ris (Mar-rel, De-vrees)… *smiles* It’s a funny name I know…but that’s the problem with being a baby, ya have no say in that kinda thing. Not that I’m complaining…

  • 'ave you been blessed wit a newsie nickname yet?
Yup, my friends call me Harlequin.

  • Where'd dat come from, anyway?
One of the French girls from the sew-shop I worked at gave it to me… I guess it’s a fancy name for clown or something *laughs* I like it.. It’s kinda classy.

  • When's yer birthday? Know how old ya are?
Uhhh *thinks* my birthday is, February 12 and I am 16 *big smile*

  • Whatcha look like?
We-e-ell… *looks at herself* I have reddish hair… more auburn I think, than anything. It’s straight and stops just a little past my jaw. I have blue-green eyes and a creamy completion *is quoting her mother* I’m really thin and really, really short *laughs a little* everyone always teases me about it.. But I don’t let it bother me anymore. *is about 4’11 and 94 pounds* * usually wears black pants and a rose colored long sleeve shirt, a black vest and a black bowler cap** *loves her bowler cap*

  • And waddya like, huh? Got mucha a personality?
I like to think of myself as friendly, and optimistic *laughs* I see no reason to be all gloomy all the time. I get along with people and I think there’s good in everybody. I like to entertain…*takes out yoyo and does a few tricks* I’m open minded and I like to learn new things *catches yoyo* next stop.. Learning how to play cards *grins* bet some of my card tricks would liven the games up a bit

  • So... where'd ya come from an watcha' doin here?
Well… My mother died of Typhoid when I was a baby *playing with yoyo** I grew up on a ship… I traveled all over with my father…*stops and holds yoyo* he was killed…*sadly* we were in the Harbor here in New York when it happened… I didn’t know what to do so a ran. I got lost and I was picked up off of the street and taken to a place where they made me work…it was bad. Not enough food… to many people in the same room. It was too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. It was scary but I tried to stay hopeful the way daddy taught me. When I did get away…I wandered around with some kids from the street. We stood on the corners and preformed. Some kids were great singers, some danced or played harmonica. I had my trusty yoyo here. *smiles at it* good ol’ Clemintine. Dad made her for me. *holds up her pride and joy, a brightly colored yoyo** well after a while I stumbled across Ravenswood and here I am. *smiles* a real light at the end of the tunnel I think. Besides I like to try new things.

  • Don't s'ppose ya got any friends, do ya?
Well… *rubs neck sheepishly* not here… no. I’m sure I have a few still wondering the streets.. *smiles* but give it time.

  • What about a "significant otha", hmm? *wink wink, nudge nudge*
*smiles, eyes sparkly* well no… I hope to have one someday. But right now I’m a happy single.

  • Waddya' do 'round heah?
I keep the morale high *smiles brightly* I mean you need someone to look on the bright side and keep people happy right? *does a few more yoyo tricks* I’m going to be a great performer someday you know..

  • If ya emptied ya pokets right now what'd be in 'em?
*reaches deeply into her pockets and dumps them out.* cards, marbles, my yoyo, some string, a few pennies, a leather ball… hmm some worry dolls… and a lucky stone.

  • Anythin' else we oughta' know?
*bites nail* I don’t like enclosed places and I’m afraid of big dogs and spiders.
