JOSE FEDERICO BURGOS

Jose Federico Burgos, brother of the famous poet Julia de Burgos.

Jose Federico Burgos was born on February 22, 1921 in Barraza, a town in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the son of Paula Garcia and Francisco Burgos Hans and the only brother among six sisters, Julia de Burgos was the oldest. After the death of his mother, Paula Garcia in 1940, he enlisted in the island's National Guard. In 1944, while still in active duty, he married Leonidas Martinez from Manati, Puerto Rico. After an Honorable Discharge in 1945, Burgos proceeded to continue with his educational studies. In 1948, he graduated from the Puerto Rico School of Commerce and received a Diploma in Bookkeeping. In 1949, he graduated and received a Diploma in General Commercial and Psychology in Business Administration. In 1949 Burgos embarked to New York searching for employment and a better way of life. While working on ships in the City Bay area, he encountered his beloved sister Julia de Burgos. When invited, he attended her poetical presentations and visited Palisades Park with the family. In 1953, Julia de Burgos passed away in Manhattan, leaving him in deep sarrow and inspiring him to write and dedicate a poem to her entitled Fundidos Novia y Rio. Throughout the following years Jose Federico Burgos wrote poems and attended cultural events where he recited his poetry. Burgos enjoyed being among other poets in the literary circle and was befriended by everyone who approached him to have a conversation about his work and Julia de Burgos. His first book of poems entitled Peregrinar es Amar was printed in 1979 and his second book Llegando al Puerto in 1982. In 1989, he received the Palma Julia De Burgos Award. He also narrated the history Puerto Rico in a video production of his entitled PUERTO RICO. On October 13, 2001, Jose Federico Burgos passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn and received Interment at Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey.

The poetry of Jose Federico Burgos is about those beautiful times in Puerto Rico that transports us to the Borinquen Culture full of flowers and flamboyan trees. The Castilian accent was heard in his declamations in a manner of dramatization; then Jose received the attention of all and accompanied by a tremendous applause. "Fundidos novia y rio" was the posthumous homage that Jose Federico Burgos wrote for his sister Julia de Burgos when she died in 1953. An interesting poem is "El coqui", with its passage from Spain to Borinquen and a longing for the well being of the Coqui in Puerto Rico. This poem was recited many times by the poet Burgos. Another poem is about the love of a son for his mother; it's very sentimental, especially when being recited. The experience of Jose with his father Francisco Burgos Hans is compared with the adventures of Don Quijote because they mounted on horse and adventured the countryside, mountains and rivers, and sometimes sat in the cemetery to rest, chew sugarcane, do stories and continue on the way. His father educated him in Puerto Rican folkloric literature and the verses of the Bible. His poetry is about those unforgettable times and Jose Federico Burgos expresses it for his love of Puerto Rico. This work was written for lovers of poetry.
