A Meeting In Beaver Falls!

Carolyn Brown is the daughter of Clarence "Duke" Sanders, B Battery, 29th
Field Artillery, who was killed in the Jeep explosion near the end of
January 1945. Lieutenant Finnel died shortly afterwards from wounds suffered
in the explosion. The only survivor was Captain Lorton (Doc) Livingston,
B Battery commander. He had been sitting in the middle over the drive shaft.
His position coupled with the fact that the Jeep was sandbagged undoubtedly
saved his life. He suffered 2 broken legs and he eventually made a full recovery.
Doc now lives with Margaret his wife in Savannah, GA.
This reunion of former B Battery members who knew her father had its genesis
with her having logged onto our website. She e-mailed me and wanted to know
if I had known her father and his close buddy Joe Hardy to whom her Aunt Eleanor
was engaged. Of course I had. As soon as I knew who she was, I called Doc
Livingston and told him that I was in contact with Duke's daughter and I told him
that it would be comforting to her if he called her. Being the great and much
revered gentleman that he is, Doc promised that he would and he did.
This led to a personal meeting in Doc's home in Savannah. Then, when I found out
that Bill and Jack along with Al Donatello were going to attend a mini 4th
Division reunion in Beaver Falls, I urged Carolyn to attend. Al was a very close
friend of her father and Bill and Jack had also known him. I told Carolyn
that she should go to Beaver Falls. It was a rare chance to be able to make contact
with 5 people who had known her father and were familiar with the circumstances
of his death. She took my advice to heart. Carolyn spent 5 hours talking alone to Al and
the time just flew by.

Our thanks to Jack Lester for taking these photo's, and to Irving Smolens for sharing this story of a rare and
wonderful reunion! As webmaster, I am very proud that this web site helped Carolyn Brown so much!
