Dan, the new picture of 2d Platoon, H Battry, 29th Artillery is looking great. I hope some of your site visitors can help supply the names of those in the picture. I'd give it a shot, but was taken after my time with the platoon. Jim Kurtz

Loved your site, I have a list of 2/29 FA personnel on my site if you'd like to take a look at it for reference. I love how much detail you go into, did you keep a journal?

Dan Fisher June 13, 1999
All former 29th Artillery members are urged to visit the Memorial Tribute pages and assist in identifying our Regimental KIA's. We have identified all of the WW2 KIA's, but have yet to complete identification for all of the Vietnam KIA's. Jon Aldridge remembers 5 names not listed, but only by last name! These are: CHAVEZ, FISHER, GRAY, RAGSDALE, WOODARD. We've confirmed GRAY, RAGSDALE, & FISHER, but need more help with CHAVEZ & WOODARD! These are very common last names. CHAVEZ could be PFC John Manuel, KIA Binh Dinh, 9-23-69. WOODARD could be CPT Joseph, KIA Tay Ninh, 5-6-69 or PFC Jackie Lavanda, died of injuries Binh Hoa, 7-10-69. Both CHAVEZ and WOODARD served in the 6-29 FA Bn after 1966, but before 1970. They deserve to be listed on our Memorial Tribute page! Webmaster

Been here b4 but just want to comment on the new feature. Music. It gave me some trouble with the operation of this Mac but I tried a few things and changes and now it seems I can put up with the main problem. Slow scroll following music. But I do like the music and there are only 3 or so pages with it . So let the good old times roll, Dan. John (Ed) Grimes who served in Friedberg, Germany from April 1951 to Oct 1952 with Headquarters Battery, 29th FA Bn. If any of my old buddies are out there let me hear from you.

Rick Kouns May 13, 1999

My Grandmothers brother, 2nd Lt. Lawrence Blanchard (Lal), was KIA June 8 1944 and was a member of the 29th FA BN. He was a 2nd Lt. and foward observer. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart, but we do not know the circumstances leading to his death or award. I have tried to get a copy of his citations but they were lost in the fire of 1973. Please help me find any information pertaining to 2nd. Lt. Blanchard.
Note: Our WW2 Veterans are working on this issue!

Judy & Howard Hicks March 24-30, 1999
My husband served in Idar-Oberstein and Baumholder from 1989 to 1991. I am looking for any one who knew him. Spec. Howard Paul Hicks, C-Btry 6/29 and C-Btry 2/29. I have found his name in your website and I am trying to find his lost military records. Can you tell me who Brian Hatheway is and/or where he got his information? If you would prefer you could give him my email and snailmail address and ask him to contact me. When he got out of the army it was on temporary records because at the time his records were already lost. He has since joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard and has attained the rank of E-5(P). We have an affidavit from his Plt Sgt and from CSM (Ret) John Woodly of the 42nd FA Bde. We also have done what you suggested but to no avail. Now we have Congressman Tom Coburn's office trying to help us. This is my mission, and I am determined to accomplish it if it takes me the rest of my life. This is the one thing that I want to do for the man who has done so much for me. What I am trying to get a hold of is a copy of the set of orders with his name on it. If you could would you put our email address on the email list? I really appreciate your help with this, Thank you very much! Judy Hicks
Note: In a effort to help Judy in her quest, I suggested she review our email listing, and "mass mail" an inquiry to those that served when her husband served. One never knows what one has, in an old briefcase or file folder!

Dan Leifheit March 29, 1999
Hello. I loved your site, its huge! I hope I can get my site to have this much information someday.Visit My HomePage:America's Secret War!

MAJ Jim Rice March 24, 1999
Greetings to any Bravo "Bandits" from 4-29 FA. I was Battery Commander (aka Bandit 6) Dec 91-Mar 93 in Baumholder, FRG. Would be happy to hear from anyone serving in 4-29 during 1990-1993 period. Prior to command, I was Battalion Motor Officer and Battalion Fire Direction Center. I remember the motto as "Warhawk Thunder" while assigned to 8th Infantry Division prior to reflagging to 1st Armor Division when our motto became "Iron Thunder." COL (Ret) Alan B. Moon was Battalion Commander Jul 91-Jul 93. Great guy! Still maintain contact with MAJ Ken Gele', Charlie Commander and MAJ Tom Core, Service Battery Commander during same period.

Michael S.Casals March 22, 1999
I was one of the original soldiers that served in the newly formed unit called The Exploitation Platoon circa 1967. I lost contact with everyone from the unit. If you are out there let me know. Our Lt's name was Busch, he was from Miami, Fla. I do not remember anyone else's name.

DeLoyd Cooper March 15, 1999
I was a member of the 275th AFA Bn but I enjoyed your web site very much. Mr. Fisher you have done a great job, congratulations.

Disturbing, But Maintains Truth!

Patrick (Doc) Dudney March 13, 1999
Hi. I'm the man who left the message about L.Z.Lilly. I was not the only man on the LZ who recalls this situation. I agree with you I find it hard to beleive that a mess crew would treat a hungry man the way we were treated. I have no reason to lie, war was bad enough and I live with these memories every day. I don't need to make up tales to demoralize ANY group of vets. We all carry enough of those feelings. I agree there was blame to be put on our leadership, they were lacking in a lot of areas. My old platoon has been having reunions for 12 years. Those hard times have formed bonds time can't touch. In closing, I meant no one in 6/29th harm . This was one of those parts of our past that should infuriate anyone who reads about the incident.

Webmaster's Note: Disturbed by his previous message, I sent Mr. Dudney an email. This was his response, and in responding, I have no doubt the "incident" happened. Unfortunately, only those that where there at that time could provide any answers. To Mr. Dudney, as I "wasn't there" when you were, I can only offer the regrets of those of us from the 6-29 FA that are once again in contact. Memories of the war are enough of a burden, and "chow" shouldn't be one of them!

COL Lynwood Lennon March 9, 1999
BoardRoom: An Infuriating Message (sent by Patrick Dudney, 2-29-99)
I just came across the message that follows (below). Redlegs, we have to find out who did this and give him the opportunity to explain his actions before some drastic reaction sets in. I can not begin to imagine ANY mess crew throwing food away AT ANY TIME in Viet Nam. My recollection is that there was ALWAYS someone around who was hungry. The mess crews that I knew went out of their way to take care of the grunts. Please help me on this.
Lynwood B. Lennon, CO, 6/29 FA June 66 - March 67.

Darryl V. Nichols March 4, 1999
I was a searchlight crew member in B-Battery, 7th Bn, 29th Arty. I would like to hear from anyone in the unit stationed in Vietnam between January 1969 -&- September 1970. This site has taken me back to days I almost forgot, but now I know is part of my soul that should never be forgotten.

True or Not - Very Disturbing!

Patrick Dudney February 29, 1999
I served with D Co. 3/12 Infantry 68-69. We secured the peremeter on LZ Lilly.
B Battery 6-29 Arty was on the hill. That is the hill where the chinook with all the ammo on it went down. I was the medic that went down and pulled the chopper pilot and co pilot out. That isn't what I remember most about LZ Lilly. 6-29 Arty had a mess hall tent on the hill. WE had been humping for weeks and had no food or water when we arrived on Lilly. At chow time we waited until all the men from the arty had gone through the chow line. Then the cooks threw the rest of the food in a garbage sump. You guys thought it was funny watching a bunch of grunts eating garbage. I have tried to forgive the nva for taking the lives of my friends but there was no excuse for the treatment we recieved. You will never know what its like to be a grunt. But let me asure you a grunt would never treat another brother that way. This is something you have to live with. My concience is clear.

Webmaster's Note: This is disturbing! I sent Mr. Dudney an email. If he chooses to respond, I'll post his answer here. Unfortunately, only those that where there at that time would know the facts. As for myself, I know of no Mess Sgt that would have turned hungry soldiers away from chow! No matter where I went in Vietnam, speaking to the Mess Sgt was all that it took to get a meal! Who was in charge of this group of men, and why didn't this "leader" speak up for his men and get them a hot meal!!?

Jay McIsaac February 23, 1999
Doing some web browsing I came across your site and was very impressed. As an enlisted member B-Btry 6/29 FA(MLRS) in 1992 & 1993 I enjoyed your site. I'm interested in having my e-mail address or a link to it placed on your site so others may contact me.

Today I did a search for the 29th FA Battalion and found your site. I too was in the unit during the Korean war and I was fortunate to have been assigned to serve in Germany after basic in Ft. Ord and then Ft. Benning. Arriving in Friedberg, sometime in April/March, I had an enjoyable time before finishing my tour in Nov. 1952. I was in Headquarters Battery, commanded by Capt. Brown. I was in the FDC under Sgt. Vilkas. My job was Driver for Capt Earl Thomas, plus radio telephone operator and sometimes computer, sending the elevations and deflections to the firing batterys. I have been in contact with several of my comrades from that period and I hosted a mini reunion of my own 3 summers ago. 3 were from my area and 1 came from Baltimore. It was and enjoyable event. We´re doing it again this year. I see no other "old timers" writing to you so maybe if they have access to a computer they may read this and join in. Thanks for letting me ramble on. John
