Helen Delp died on May 14, 2003 at the venerable age of 98. Helen was, perhaps the last of the old time school secretaries She joined the clerical staff at Unity Drive Elementary School in the early 1960’s with Al Marcantonio as the principal.
The faculty referred to Helen as the “Iron Lady”. It soon became apparent that Helen Delp was the ”Power Behind The Throne”. And that was long before the advent of Margaret Thatcher (England’s one-time Prime minister).
She literally took command and got the Jericho Elementary School ready for its opening in 1970. Helen was a fierce member of the bowling league and an ardent solver of cross word puzzles (The New York Times).
“Forced” to retire” at 72 (existing law at that time) Helen continued to bowl with the school league and kept driving until a few years ago. Helen was a vibrant, dynamic and above all an indomitable woman
In memory of Helen Delp, by her friend, Anthony Baiata
