EULOGY FOR A FRIEND

Oh happy day when we began. Do you remember? It's hard for me to remember. First there was the beginning. No bugles, no accolades. Just an acceptance. Who am I? Who are you? Now it's past you know, but then it's not. "Will you make a difference? Will I make a difference?" And then again how could we? There were so many things of which we were both so ignorant. "Did you know that I was here before you?" "Did you know that I'll be here when you're gone?" We each thought our presence was forever. There will come a time when all things present will be past, we must have known. Neither of us would listen. And so we went our determined way, unable now to come back again this way. But then we can. Do you remember how we stood outside like kids with our noses pressed against a bakery window? Then we were in; you, me and the so many who have gone like sand below the incoming tide. Couldn't we have stopped somewhere along the way? Couldn't we have rested, talked and laughed and got to know how important the present is? It's hard now to recall what transpired in those nearly 15,000 days. So little comes to mind. Somebody must have known that we were important because we didn't know it ourselves. I never found an opportunity to tell you that you were my friend. On the very day I stepped on a plane to return to NY, God called you home. Now it's too late, but then again it's not.
