WRITING HISTORICAL FICTION:

A Unit Focusing On

Colonial America

By Janice Smith...Riverhead Middle School ELA

Text Box:

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time, to see life as it was one hundred or two hundred years ago? Have you ever imagined yourself in the deep forests of our land, when Native Americans roamed the woods, or when colonists were just getting started? If so, you will enjoy time travel by way of historical fiction. Historical fiction is literature that has pretend people in it, but that is set in a time long ago. By reading it you can time travel to that place and imagine yourself into the story as you read.

In this unit you will be asked to be a time traveler in your mind, and to create a character who lives in an earlier time. You will be asked to help us see and be with this character through your own writing as a writer of historical fiction.

It’s easy, and it’s fun. So dust off your Time Traveler caps and welcome aboard. If you want, your created character can be you, transported back into time...perhaps the time of the Revolution itself.
