Follow Route 44/55 west from Poughkeepsie to Minnewaska State Park. The park is at the southern end of the Catskill Mountains (Part of the Adirondak Range.) Park the car, and take one of the trails to Lake Minnewaska (B) and Lake Awosting (C). You'll be up around 2,200 ft ASL. Take the trail as far as Sam's Point (near Craigsmoor on the map) and on a clear day they say you can see five states. To the northwest you can see at least 70 miles. Photos from Minnewaska. . . . . . . . Take Route 6 East into Harriman (Palisades) Park and park at any designated spot, and you won't have far to walk for some spectacular views.
