Flushing Greens

Welcome To The Flushing Greens!!!

Hello, Neighbor! Welcome to the Flushing Greens.!

Flushing is known for being the home of people from all over the world. The Unisphere, the famous globe of the world, created for the 1966 World's Fair, stands high in our Flushing Meadow Park. But is Flushing a village full of good neighbors of all colors, or just a bunch of people from around the world who happen to live next door to each other?

Many of us stay only with people who look like us, talk like us, or come from our part of the world. We may do this because of language problems, or because we're shy, or because we've heard "bad things" about other people and we don't trust them.

We should all be proud of our culture, and stay connected to it. If our culture is lost, our foundation is gone. Yet, we also lose when we miss the chance to make a new friend because "they are not like us."

With a divided Flushing, the politicians have taken advantage of us. The Democrats and Republicans visit our places of worship, visit our cultural organizations and events, but have things gotten better? No! They make promises to each group, but they know each little group by itself has no power. We gave the Democrats and the Republicans our vote and what did it get us?

Flushing still has problems with smelly garbage, airplane noise and streets that are dangerous for our children and elders to cross. Foul smells rise from the polluted bay and blow right into our streets and homes. The air pollution from airplanes, congested traffic, businesses breaking pollution laws, and from the constant digging and building in Flushing, has raised the rates of asthma and other diseases affected by our environment. We need more than programs telling us to take our medicine - WE NEED TO ELIMINATE THE POLLUTION!!

The overcrowding of our schools prevents our children from receiving the personal attention they need from their teachers. The sky-high rents businesses are charged make it hard for small businesses to survive. The new housing that is going up is too expensive for even working and middle class people -- the poor are forgotten.

Aren't you ready for a change?

GREEN PRINCIPLES

Everyone has the right to a decent standard of living - the right to food, housing, education, medical care, childcare, clean air and water, the right to be free from the fear of violence, the right to a decent paying job.

It does not matter if we were born here, or if we came here from somewhere else. We are all part of the Flushing community.

We must preserve the earth for our grandchildren's children.

This includes the communities where we live, as well as the rivers, mountains, forests and parks. We must keep trees and green places and garden areas as part of our neighborhoods. We cannot build on every inch of land.

Local residents must be the ones who control the economic and political decisions that affect our lives.

We are the ones who live in Flushing. We are the ones who suffer when decisions are made that leave us with air pollution, dirty streets, overcrowded schools, and housing problems.

The Green Party is an alternative. We're a people's party, for ordinary people, organized by ordinary people and controlled by ordinary people. We're here to give you a reason to vote and a reason to become active in politics.

You can register to vote as a Green; you can join the Flushing Greens, or you can do both!

The Flushing Greens is one of several Green Party political/community activist groups (we call them locals) in Queens. The two other Queens locals are Central Queens Greens in Rego Park and West Queens Greens in Astoria.

Our locals are groups of concerned neighbors who want to improve our community, the city, and even the world!

You can join a local whether you are a citizen or not, and help make your community a better place. We need the ideas and suggestions of EVERYONE who lives here, young and old, no matter what race, sex or gender, no matter what your religious beliefs are.

ALL ARE WELCOME. Everyone has ideas to offer. Only by coming together can we change things. We can make it happen!
