Confederate St. Barry Benson, who tunneled out of Elmira Prison. Benson, of Co H., 1st SC Inf was a prisoner of Elmira from July 25 to October 7, 1864. At 4:00 am on the later date, he and nine companions entered a tunnel sixty-five feet long, which they had been digging for about two months.
