Shattered Dreams - Chapter 4
Shattered Dreams - Chapter 4

"Watch the road, jerk!" Adrienne bolted out the car window to a rubbernecking white sedan slowing down to read the name of a street sign. She forced out a gust of breath as Vanessa and Danny peered at her timidly. Droplettes of water began to attack the car lightly as the greying skys thickened like molasses.

"Whoa, Killer!" Danny joked in the backseat, putting his feet up on the back of Vanessa's seat.

"Sorry, I'm just in such a rush!" Adrienne admitted, turning onto their busy street. She leaned her head on her left palm, crusing down the street nonchalantly. "I've got to get the fudge I made the guys out of the refrigerator and tidy up my room before picking up Chris at 3."

"You better get your rear in gear then," Vanessa suggested as she pulled down the mirror, admiring her cosmopolitan beauty.

The car crawled into the back parking lot of their apartment complex. Adrienne swiftly stepped out of the car, tossing her pocketbook onto her shoulder. "Tell Devon to call me tonight," Adrienne called behind her to Danny as she briskly walked to the back door.

"Alright," Danny replied as Vanessa held the car door open for him.

"Don't have too much fun, Rina," Vanessa warned her with a joyous smile.

"Funny, Nessa," was Adrienne's final shout as the tan door closed behind her.

At 3:05, Adrienne placed the fudge (and the vanilla cupcakes for Greg) in the backseat. After sitting down and smoothing out her salmon-colored tank top and khaki capris, she turned on the ignition and her baby purred lovingly. She pulled out of the parking lot and made the perilous journey across the street.

Chris was waiting for her outside the apartment complex. His smile was visible even through the darkness of that day. She pulled up to the curb cautiously as Chris scooted over to the passanger's side. "Hey," Adrienne greeted him, turning up the radio a notch.

"What's up?" Chris asked her, reaching across to embrace his friend in a hug. Rina's perfume floated into his nose and he smiled. "That's gotta be...CK1 you're wearing?"

"You've been practicing, huh Chris?" Adrienne implored as the car sauntered back into the traffic line.

They arrived at the dance studio at 3:37. Chris opened the door for Adrienne and they walked down a long corridor to a dance studio exploding with Dream Street's music. They entered to see Greg, Frankie, Matt and Jesse stretching along the floor. Mirrors hugged the studio proudly as 3 large ceiling fans circulated the sensational music. Fresh wax was streaked on the wood floor awaiting energetic feet.

"Chris," a woman stated with a dissapointed head shake. She strolled over from the right, hands on her hips. "Always fashionably late?"

"You know it," Chris replied, giving the woman a hug. She had long, layered brown hair that framed her elongated face. Her brown eyes were fixaded on Chris, not knowing what to say to his usual reply. The woman's cold expression melted away as she looked over to Adrienne. "Oh, Claudia!" Chris shouted, not realizing Adrienne was beside him. "This is Adrienne, the girl I've been telling you about."

"What does she have in her hands?!" Jesse, the blondie shouted over her shoulder.

"That's Jesse," Chris whispered to her, "He doesn't get out much. Ignore his rudeness."

"OK," Adrienne replied with a giggle. All 4 of the guys got up to meet this girl Chris brought with him to practice.

"So whose this chickie?" Greg asked, raising his eye brows flirtateously.

"Well, this GIRL," Adrienne corrected him boldly, "is Adrienne. And you're Greg."

"Oh, she got you, man," Frankie laughed, hitting him on the back.

"That's Frankie, Jesse and Matt," Chris continued, introducing each guy.

"A pleasure," Adrienne assured them, friendliness swimming from her smile. "I've always wanted to meet the guys keeping Chris away from me." The 4 friends peered at her, confusion hanging over their heads.

"Are you..." Matt asked, eyebrows narrowed. "His girlfriend?"

Before Adrienne could mudder a word, Frankie bursts out of the line. "Hey!" Frankie shouted joyously. He gave Chris a hug, but Chris was stunned by Matt's question. "Congrats."

"Dude, get off," Chris demanded, "This is Adrienne...Rina? My friend since like forever?"

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh," Jesse replied, pointing to her. "That's RINA!"

"Yeah, I'm RINA," Adrienne mocked, but Jesse only smiled.

"What is in your hands, Rina?" Greg asked with wandering eyes.

"Well," Adrienne started, placing the box on the floor. She squatted down and tore of the lid, revealing a mound of lucious, creamy chocolate fudge dressed up with walnuts and 3 vanilla cupcakes slopped in vanilla icing. The guys all leaned in, smiles glowing on their faces and hunger growing rapidly in their bellies. "I figured first impressions count so I whipped up a batch of some of my favorites."

"Oh lord..." Jesse whispered, his eyes widening as he licked his lips savagely.

"You guys can't feast now," Claudia piped in, walking over and taking a piece of fudge. She put it to her lips and took a tentalizing bite. The guys stared at her like dogs begging for some table scraps. "Now, let's go," Claudia mumbled, waving them to the mirrors.

The guys were amazing, Adrienne concluded. Their feet were like lightening as they turned, twisted and jumped with the music. It was hypnosis watching them. Sweat poured out of every extremity as they kept up with the beat. Claudia bopped along with the music, occasionally interjecting helpful hints for the boys. Adrienne couldn't believe how much Chris has changed. He use to be a shy, insecure nerd with frizzy hair. Now he was a pop prince and every girl who've touched a Dream Street CD knew it.

It was 7 when the guys had to disperse from the studio. Greg, Frankie, Matt and Jesse bolted to the lonley treats awaiting for them on the side. They devoured them whole.

"I didn't know my taste buds could taste such sweetness!" Matt exclaimed, thanking Adrienne for the fudge.

"You're welcome, but we better go, Chris," Adrienne suggested. "It was so nice to meet you all."

"Hey," Jesse shouted to Chris as he hugged Adrienne, "she's always welcome here!"

"OK Jess," Chris laughed, leaning against the doorframe. Adrienne said her final goodbyes as she departed from the studio.

"We have to talk, Chris," Adrienne informed him as he reached for the door handle of the car.

"About what?" Chris asked, freezing his hand in place.

"Danny told me..." Adrienne started, looking down at his hand, "that he saw us go into a bedroom at Erik's party alone. He concluded...God...that we had sex."

Those words impacted him as much as the wind could blow him over. He looked at Adrienne astounded, his hazel eyes broadening. "Oh my God," Chris said, rubbing his head, "was I...were we that drunk?"

"I guess so," Adrienne replied smiling slightly.

"I mean...Whoa..." Chris continued flabbergasted, sitting down on the curb. Adrienne plopped next to him. "Were we careful?"

"I hope so," Adrienne pleaded, staring into Chris's eyes frightened.

"Babe," Chris replied, shaking his head at his own mistake, "I'm sorry. I never looked at you like...like someone I'd..."

"It takes two to tango, Chris," Adrienne reminded him, softly caressing his bare arm.

"It'll be OK, right?" Chris asked curiously, looking up to Rina as he shrugged his shoulder.

"Only time will tell," Adrienne admitted to him, throwing her arms around him solacely, "Only time will tell."
