ATO Pictures' Amandla! Deal
2/7/2002 2:41:44 PM

For Immediate Release
February 1, 2002

ATO RECORDS & NEWLY FORMED, ATO PICTURES STRIKE DEAL WITH AMANDLA! (A REVOLUTION IN FOUR PART HARMONY)
Winner of Two Awards at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival

ATO Records and ATO Pictures, the newly launched film production company, are pleased to announce a unique partnership with Kwela Productions, creators of the Sundance award-winning film Amandla!, a stirring film about the music and songs of the anti-apartheid movement of South Africa. Through the partnership, ATO Records will produce and distribute the Amandla! soundtrack as well as a compilation record of US and South African artists inspired by the film.

Amandla! ,which means “power” in Xhosa, was made over a ten year period and reveals the critical role that music played in the the struggle against apartheid from 1948 to the 1994 election of Nelson Mandela and the ANC to political power. Amandla! shows how music was not only a unifying force through the forty year struggle, but also a means to inspire and motivate the people to continue resistance. “As filmmakers our goal was to capture the infectious spirit of this music, creating an unforgettable experience for audiences.” Says director, Lee Hirsch.

Amandla! won both the Documentary Audience Award and the Freedom of Expression Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. The film received standing ovations, winning over the critics and audience alike. Roger Ebert called Amandla! both “sorrowful and joyous…the widest range of emotion of any film at this year's Sundance” and proclaimed “the music will no doubt inspire a CD to rival "Buena Vista Social Club." Elvis Mitchell of the New York Times called Amandla! a “celebration” and “one of the best films” of the Sundance Film Festival. David Rooney from Variety declares the movie, “...a stirring account of courage and spirit in the face of unendurable hardship and injustice.”

"This documentary is a marvel, an extraordinary achievement. While it is the story of South Africa, the message is universal. Not one person should miss this film. Not one" says Matthews.

According To Our Pictures (ATO Pictures), a film production company, was recently formed by the founders of ATO Records, Jonathan Dorfman and Temple Fennell, two award winning filmmakers from South Africa and the United States. ATO Pictures intends to have two to three films in development by the end of 2002. The company is currently reviewing submissions for feature projects from independent filmmakers.

According To Our Records (ATO Records) was formed in 2000 by Dave Matthews, Dave Mathews Band manager Coran Capshaw, and Matthews/Capshaw associates Michael McDonald and Chris Tetzeli. The ATO Records artist roster to date includes David Gray, Patty Griffin, Gov’t Mule, Ben Kweller and Chris Whitley. Matthews, Hirsch and Simpson will work alongside Capshaw, McDonald and Tetzeli as executive producers of the records.

Message from Dave Matthews
9/19/2001 9:22:41 AM

It is hard to know what to say in the wake of this great tragedy. Nothing seems enough. In one moment the unspeakable is the headline; the unbelievable as real as the rising and setting of the sun. I am both outraged and afraid. This is an attack on each and every one of us.

We, as Americans and as members of the world community, must be united in our mourning, focused in our anger, and united in our resolve to find the solution. Let us find strength and comfort in the wisdom and diversity of this great land.

Respectfully,
Dave Matthews

Dave Matthews Performs "Waste" on Phish Tribute CD
6/12/2001 1:10:33 PM

The Mockingbird Foundation has announced the complete roster of contributors to Sharin' in the Groove: Celebrating the Music of Phish, a double-disc Phish tribute which will be released July 17. The compilation will feature 143 musicians performing 25 songs, including at least one track originally released on each of Phish's eight studio albums, plus three songs never previously released by Phish. Proceeds will exclusively benefit music education for children.

The collection illustrates the diverse body of music from which Phish draws, with creative uses of folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, rock, thrash, punk, rap, hip hop, drum n bass, ambient, reggae, calypso, string orchestra, and barbershop quartet.

The selection of contributors focused on artists and styles who have influenced Phish, rather than those whom Phish has influenced. The traditional concept behind tribute albums is thus reversed. The complete tracklist, including the name of every artist and the song that each performed, is now available on the Foundation's website (www.mockingbirdfoundation.org).

Statement From The Band Regarding Local Security At RFK
6/11/2001 7:02:07 PM

As those of you who went to the RFK show know, the local security at RFK Stadium did a very poor job at handling crowd control at the show on Saturday. We want to apologize to those of you who were inconvenienced by what occurred. The local security and ushering staff at RFK focused more on ejecting enthusiastic and excited fans, than staying in their positions and keeping things under control. Despite pleas from us in the band and our tour management staff, our fans continued to be thrown out and local security problems persisted throughout the show. This is not the way we want to see our fans treated, and we will very carefully evaluate any future show that we may consider at this venue.

Sincerely,
Dave Matthews Band

April 22nd Scott Stadium Show Cancelled
4/10/2001 6:41:40 PM

The event organizers, with the consent of Dave Matthews Band management, have decided to cancel the Sunday April 22nd performance at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia; the sold out Saturday, April 21st show at Scott Stadium will go on as scheduled. The band members and their management apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this cancellation may cause the band’s fans or to the community.

Said Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw, "We decided to launch the 2001 tour in Charlottesville for two reasons. We wanted to provide our hometown fans a truly special local show while simultaneously raising money for Bama Works Fund, the band’s charitable fund that focuses on the needs of the Charlottesville-Albemarle community. Through this special benefit engagement the band wished to give thanks to both their fans and to a community who have been extremely supportive through the past ten years.

"The ticket demand for the first show greatly exceeded our expectations and our plans. While I initially thought the fans and the community would be further benefited by the addition of a second show, I now believe we should work within the limits of one show. The April 21st event will generate more than $850,000 for the Bama Works Fund. To date, ticket sales for the second show do not assure sufficient additional net proceeds for the charitable fund to justify the strain on the community that the second show may bring."

The band appreciates the great outpouring of support they have received regarding both the performance and the charitable efforts the show will support.

In addition to the April 21st show in Charlottesville, Dave Matthews Band will headline two shows at the Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek (April 28 and 29), RFK Stadium in Washington DC (June 9) and the Virginia Beach Amphitheater (July 27).).

Boyd Tinsley donates proceeds from Twix commercial to
8/9/2000 2:51:31 PM

As many of you may have noticed, Boyd is currently appearing in the new M&M/Mars TWIX commercial. All the proceeds from Boyd's fee have been donated to two important charities; the H.O.P.E. Columbine Fund and Feed the Children.

HOPE ("Healing of People Everywhere") is the foundation established by the families of those injured and killed in the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, in April 1999. The foundation is raising funds to complete the conversion of the existing school library, where most of the students died, into an atrium, and to construct a new library to the west of the school.

"Like all Americans I was shocked and profoundly saddened by the shootings at Columbine," said Tinsley. "When I found out what HOPE was doing, I felt that if I could help out, I would."

Says Rita Kahn, co-chair of HOPE: "The benevolence of individuals such as Boyd who are helping heal the wounds of Columbine is simply astounding. We at HOPE are deeply moved by Boyd's display of generosity." And Nancy Kernow, sister of Columbine victim Steven Kernow added: "I'm absolutely overwhelmed; I cannot thank Boyd enough. He's really opened his heart to our cause."

After hearing of Boyd's donation during the filming of the Twix commercial, M&M/Mars was inspired to match Boyd's contribution and made a donation to HOPE as well.

Boyd contributed the other portion of his earnings to the Oklahoma City based Feed the Children. This donation provided nine semi-tractor trailers loaded with food to help underprivileged children and their families across the nation.

To follow up this donation, on July 23rd, Boyd personally went to South Chicago to help Feed the Children deliver food and toys to thousands of families. Through Boyd's truck sponsorship, almost a million meal supplements are helping needy children and families in Kentucky, Texas, Virginia and the inner-city of Chicago.

Feed The Children is a nonprofit, charitable organization providing physical, spiritual, educational, vocational/technical, psychological, economic and medical assistance and other necessary aid to children, families, and persons in need in the United States and internationally.

Boyd hopes his donations will further inspire fans and artists alike to get involved and help raise awareness for these important organizations. For more information or to make donations contact:

Listener Supported DVD update
3/15/2000 2:59:26 PM

It has come to the attention of RCA Records and DMB that there have been a small number of problems associated with the playback of the "Listener Supported" DVD. Our research indicates that this is due to a hardware conflict with a limited number of JVC DVD players that were manufactured prior to February 3, 1999. Recently manufactured "Listener Supported" DVDs do not exhibit playback problems. Those who have experienced this conflict may return their DVD to the address below. A replacement will be sent as soon as possible.

Dave Matthews Band Donates to Local Park

Great-grandmother Nancy Luck became a lifelong Dave Matthews Band fan Wednesday — without ever having heard a note of the group’s music.

The 65-year-old Esmont resident was won over by a $250,000 gift the rock group set aside for the construction of a park in her southern Albemarle County community. An anonymous donor added another $250,000 to contribute toward construction of the park.

The 13.6-acre site, soon to feature basketball courts, soccer fields and picnic tables, is located across the street from the Yancey Elementary School on Route 627, about 20 miles south of Charlottesville.

"The children here need a place to play," Luck said, adding that she currently has to drive her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to parks in Scottsville and Charlottesville. "The community needed something like this."

Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw agreed. "In these times of economic prosperity, there are some pockets here that could still use some help," he said.

Albemarle officials say the proposed park is a central ingredient to the revitalization of Esmont, a community of approximately 1,200. The new park, according to county spokeswoman Lee Catlin, will be the "crown jewel" of efforts by the county and Esmont residents to rehabilitate the area.

Esmont residents persuaded county administrators in 1996 to consider building the park.

Two years later, the Board of Supervisors approved spending $41,900 to purchase the site. The county had scheduled to set aside about $50,000 a year to build the park, according to Patrick Mullaney, Albemarle’s director of parks and recreation. Because the project’s cost is estimated at $650,000, it probably would have taken about seven years to get construction under way, he said. But thanks to the massive gift announced Wednesday, work is expected to begin in about a year, officials said. "I can’t recall a donation of this size being made to the county — certainly never for county parks," Mullaney said. Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley said the Esmont Park donation was part of an ongoing series of contributions the group has made.

The band gave $45,000 last year to the renovation of Charlottesville’s Washington Park. The group also has offered to help pay for the $80,000 renovation of the skateboard park on McIntire Road, said Charlottesville Chief of Recreation Johnny Ellen said.

In addition, the group has made contributions to Meals on Wheels, the Charlottesville Free Clinic and the Shelter for Help in Emergency. Virginia’s General Assembly recognized the rockers last year when legislators passed a resolution praising their beneficence. "All of us had the opportunity to leave [the area] after we got successful," said Tinsley, a North Garden resident. "[But] we all love this place. As long as we’re here, we want to contribute to the community."

Asked if county residents could expect the group to appear at the new park for an impromptu performance, the musician answered, "you never know."

The five-member Dave Matthews Band was formed in Charlottesville in 1991, playing together for the first time in public at a party for all of 40 people. Since then, the group has sold millions of albums and become one of the world’s more popular bands. The half-million dollar gift was made through the Charlottesville-Albemarle Community Foundation, a philanthropic endowment that funds charities in the Charlottesville area. The Board of Supervisors has yet to decide on a name for the park. But regardless of the name, Nancy Luck said, the park will make Esmont history. The Christian music fan said her only regret is that her father isn’t alive to see its construction. "There used to be nothing here," she said. "At least his great-great-grandchildren will enjoy it."

Dave Matthews Band Concert Special to Air Nationally on PBS on September 29th
9/15/1999 3:57:46 PM

On Wednesday, September 29, at 10:30 p.m. EST, PBS will air nationally Dave Matthews Band: An IN THE SPOTLIGHT Special (check local listings). Presented by Thirteen/WNET in New York, this one hour concert special will be filmed at the band's sold out September engagement at Continental Airline Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. As Rolling Stone said recently, "Dave Matthews Band is one of a handful of acts that have emerged in this decade to progress from tiny dives to headliner status - and, of that select group, the only one that consistently draws crowds rivaling those of classic-rock acts of the Sixties and Seventies." IN THE SPOTLIGHT will give folks across the country the opportunity to see Dave Matthews Band for free and in the front row center.

Dave Matthews Band recently wrapped up their 60-date U.S. spring/summer tour. Taking a break for the remainder of this year, the band will head into the studio in early 2000 to record their fourth album for RCA. Look for another live release from Dave Matthews Band late this fall and a studio release to come next year.
