Replace a form's textarea field(s) with a custom one that supports WYSIWYG formatting with this Rich Text Editor script. It allows the user to easily format the entered content, such as make it bold, change its size, colors etc. The resulting source code is then submitted as regular text for further processing by your form script.
This script works in IE5+/Mozilla 1.3+/Mozilla Firebird/Firefox 0.6.1+/Netscape 7.1+. In Mozilla, it relies on the Mozilla Rich Text Editing API ]. Browsers that aren't supported should see just a regular form textarea.

We have tested the code in IE 8.0, Firefox3.5.5, Opera 10.20, Netscape 9.0.0.6, Flock2.52, Safari Public Beta 4(528.16) and AOL Explorer 1.5. This script worked well in all platforms with the following variations observed.

  • Spell Check button was not visible in any browser other than IE 8.0
Reason being is that ieSpell is an IE add-on only.
  • In Safari Public Beta 4(528.16) the only thing visible is a textarea form with no rich text options.

For Your Information For your Information:     Before we begin, we feel obligated to advise you that the above form is for all intensive purposes a "Stand Alone" script. In other words, it really does not do much of anything other than what you see. In order to make it function as designed, you need to incorporate it into a valid working form. If you do not have a good Solid Knowledge of HTML coding, javascripts, forms and reconfigurations, please "Do Not Attempt" this until you are Proficient in the aforementioned areas.

We at this time do not feel a tutorial is required for this rich text editor. Reason being is that the page you will be getting the code has an excellent tutorial covering everything that is required.

Note Of importance     If you are editing this effect in an editor such as AngelFire ] as we are, when you click on "Preview" to see your work, you will get one of three error message(s) in the lower left corner of your browser. (See Below) Do not get alarmed. Once you view it as the real address and not in the cgi-auth/webshell the error will not be there.

For Your Information All the graphics, twenty six (26) to be exact you will need to upload and install into your directory needs to be installed into your /images directory. If you do not upload them into this directory, you will not see any of the images appear and you will be stuck with the infamous little red X and wonder why. The way this script and all its components are configured, it would take you forever to even try and reconfigure all the images into another directory. So to save you a hugh headache and frustration, just upload them into your /images directory. also, there is one graphic ( a scissors ) to cut, is not available on this free edition of this effect. This is available plus many others from the Designers Website ] and there is a cost involved. The following files, blank.htm, palette.htm, demo.htm and nsert_table.htm need to be uploaded into your top or root directory for basically the same reason as the images. Too many reconfigurations to be bothered with to change the path that calles these files.

On A Final Note     If you click the ABC SpellCheck-iespell (which is ieSpell) within the Rich Text Editor, unless you have it ieSpell ] installed on your system, you will get a prompt to download it from their (iespell check's) website. To use the spellcheck, it has to be installed on the sysem that is using the form. It can not be hosted from a remote location.

We hope our tutorial was easy to follow and we covered everything in detail. If you would like to add this effect into your pages, grab the respective below link and you are there. If you have any problems with this or anything else, feel free to consult our FAQ ] and if you can't find the answer there, contact us ].
