The long awaited "live album" from the June/July 2000 Madison Square Garden shows was released on March 27, 2001. It serves as the soundtrack for the HBO special, which was first broadcasted on April 7th, 2001. A DVD "Live In New York City" was also released later in the year.

All songs on the album were recorded on the final two nights, June 29 and July 1st, 2000, of the MSG stand, which closed out Springsteen's 1999-2000 "Reunion Tour". Two new songs, "Land of Hopes and Dreams", and "American Skin" were released on album for the first time (Both songs were written during "The Reunion Tour") "American Skin" is the haunting song which refers to the tragedy of the Diallo shooting in New York City by members of the NYPD. Bruce sings of the violence, fear and mistrust prevalent on the streets of America, on both ends of the gun barrel. The song, both heralded and condemned, makes a poignant statement about American society. "Land Of Hope And Dreams" is a magnificent song which would also be a standerd during "The Rising" tour.
