History of the Weimaraner

By Dassah Nygren

Bayern im Herzen von Europa

The Weimaraner comes from Bavaria, the Republic of Weimar. Weimaraner means, one who comes from Weimar. The Weimaraner has not been in the USA very long. The Weimaraner Club of Germany/Austria have strict rules on which dogs or bitches can be bred. To this day the instincts and blood lines stay strong. Serious Weimaraner owners are very concerned about their breeding programs.

It is important to know what you are getting into. Know the health of the sire & dam and its important if in their line there are autoimmune issues. This way the new buyer does not have to deal with large vet bills or even worse, having to put a young puppy down.

Through the years the Weimaraner has been a popular breed. But, most have found it is not a breed for everyone for the following reasons:

1. Do not like to be left alone outside.

2. Always prefers being with humans always.

3. Exercise is very important. It helps alleviate boredom and keeps them fit.

4. They can be very social. As long as you do your part by walking them in public places, going to Conformation and Obedience Classes they will be well mannered

5. Chewing is out of boredom. Exercise / Company / Lots of Toys will help a lot.

Famous People That Have Owned Weimaraners

  • Roy Rogers and Dale Evans
  • Sharon Stone
  • Grace Kelly
  • Bon Jovi

Most importantly, do not get a Weimaraner because they look good. You want a Weimaraner if he/she will fit into your life style. Otherwise both dog and owner will be unhappy. Many Weims are currently in the rescue program because of this. If you are not going compete with your Weim, you must spay or neuter. Dogs are healthier and live longer!

      Yes, Weimaraners Shed!

Buy from a Breeder that is not a puppy mill and guarantees your puppy. They should always help the owner through shots/puppy stage/showing, all events. The breeder should be there any date or time. Caring is for your puppy is breeder/owner’s first priority.

      Good Luck!
