Van is the hero of this story, as well as my favorite character (that picture's only partly a coincidence, heehee). Orphaned at a very young age, Van grew up being responsible for a whole country. However, in order the true king, he must complete the task of dragon slaying. While fighting the dragon, Van gets transported to the Mystic Moon, our Earth. There he runs into Hitomi, or rather, she runs into him, and the whole adventure begans. No sooner has he become king than Zaibach attacks Fanelia, causing him to take Escaflowne and flee. Unlike most heroes you see, Van is far from perfect. He often tends to fight at the wrong times, which is ironic since he never liked fighting from the start. The main reasons he fights is for his country, to protect his friends, and also in honor of his deceased mentor, Balgus. Van is not a very open person and usually hides his feelings from others, which causes him problems. He has feelings for Hitomi, but is afraid to show them. Allen is his friend and his rival, both on the battlefield and in efforts to win over Hitomi. As he is a king, it is a practical assumption to make that he doesn't have much of a private life. Despite this, Van has one big secret: a pair of wings which he inherited by his mother, who was one of the last remaining Draconians, the descendants, and believed to be destroyers, of Atlantis. As a child, Van promised his mother that he would never reveal his wings until the right time comes. Okay, I have plenty more, but this is already long enough. So, Van's relationships with others, Merle, Folken, etc. will be in their sections.
