Merle is Van's cat-girl companion since childhood, when Balgus found her. She is extremely devoted and rather obsessed with Van, who she has a gigantic crush on. However, he doesn't share her feelings. This makes her very jealous of Hitomi, and the two fight almost constantly. Merle was probably the first to recognize their feelings for each other, long before they did. Even though she doesn't like it, she wants him to be happy. Merle is completely loyal to him and is almost always by his side throughout the series.
