RESEARCHING YOUR GREAT WAR RELATIVE

The most frequent request I receive through this website is for information concerning relatives who served in the AEF during WWI. Although I can sometimes provide limited information on those who served with the 27th Division, my resources are limited and I generally have to send you to numerous other websites to get the information you are requesting.

These links will close O'Ryan's Roughnecks and connect you to other sites. Please use the link at the bottom of this page to add O'Ryan's Roughnecks to your favorites.

The NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION

Although the National Archives is "the source" for records research I find their website confusing and less than user friendly. If you're looking to do online research at NARA you are out of luck. What you will find online is a catalog of their records with the location, not the actual records. Please keep in mind that dealing with government agencies involved in records searches requires persistance and patience. Unless you know exactly what you are looking for and have the time and experience I suggest hiring a researcher.

The AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES MEMORIAL PROJECT is an online museum and research center. Their mission statement: "To promote awareness of individual involvement in the Great War through the preservation, research, and sharing of period artifacts and ephemera" is one that is shared by O'Ryan's Roughnecks. They offer research services and are experienced in NARA searches for records. Anyone who has tried to find records at NARA without knowing where to start will realize how valuable it is to have experienced people on your case. The site also contains links to other research databases and websites. This looks like an excellent place to start your research on your Great War ancesters

The DOUGHBOY CENTER, a site run by the Great War Society, has an outstanding page of articles and links specifically aimed at helping you track down this information.

In addition to the sites and sources listed at the AEF MEMORIAL PROJECT and The DOUGHBOY CENTER I also recommend the following links for records and information on soldiers who were New York State residents at the time of enlistment:

THE NEW YORK STATE MILITARY HISTORY MUSEUM
AND VETERAN'S RESEARCH CENTER

NEW YORK STATE ARCHIVES

COMPANY ROSTERS, 107TH INFANTRY
