warships escorting transport ships carrying infantry under the command of
Ben Butler. They assaulted the Confederate forts that stood guard
over Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina. Stringham's steam frigates
pounded Forts Hatteras and Clark until they surrendered to the Federals.
Three months later, in November 1861, Flag Officer Samuel F. DuPont, commanded the naval part of a joint Federal operation and captured Forts Walker and Beauregard and occupied Port Royal, South Carolina. Port Royal became the safe base of operation for the Federal fleet on blockade duty. In February 1862, Flag Officer Louis M. Goldsborough and Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside led an amphibious assault into the North Carolina Sounds. |
