Information on Sea Otters

Where Sea Otters Live

Sea otters can be found in the Pacific Ocean along the coast of California, up to Alaska, along the eastern coast of Russia (what used to be called Russia), and all the way to northern tip of Japan. They live only in a narrow band of coastal waters, never straying into the deep ocean, except in rare instances when they might travel between islands and mainland. Kelp beds are a favored habitat of the sea otter. In fact, sea otters help create kelp beds, by eating urchins and other kelp-eating animals.

What are Sea otters?

Sea Otters are marine mammals. They are related to the mink and weasle family. Sea otters are very furry, they have the softest fur in the world. It is the smallest marine mammal in North America and is about 4 feet long. Female otters weigh an average of 45 pounds and male otters weigh an average of 65 pounds. Sea otters live an average of 10-11 years.

What Sea Otters Eat

Sea otters eat crabs, mollusks, sea weed, and other small sea urchins. Sea otters are very smart when they have to open a crab shell they place a rock on their belly, and smack it. Sea otters eat as much as 15 boys eat per day.

Preys and How to Help Sea Otters

Sea otters do get attacked by killer whales and sharks, but their number one threat is oil spills. When oil gets in their fur they probably eat it and it will cause liver failure, which kills sea otters.

*How to Help*

Make a pledge to:

-Recycle everything that can be recycled at home and school

- Stop using plastic bags

- take reusable bags to the store or request paper bags.

-Use waxed paper, aluminum foil, or cellulose bags instead of plastic at home and school.

-Choose paper and glass packaging over plastic when shopping

- Avoid styrofoam and plastic containers at fast food restaurants

-Refill and reuse containers when appropriate.

Conserve electricity at home by: Turning off lights and appliances when not in use, keeping the thermostat turned down to minimize the use of heat, using energy-efficient light bulbs, walking, biking, carpooling, or taking public transportation instead of getting in the car at least one day a week. With everyone's help, the horrible devastation caused by an oil spill, similar to what happened in Alaska as a result of the Exxon Valdez spill when thousands of otters were killed, can be prevented. Most importantly we will all benefit from a cleaner environment especially the otters.
