A quick comment:     Back to Review A-I     Back to Ultra Magnus Homepage

I was gonna get the 2009 Ultra Magnus bust earlier, but had to wait because it was a little bit pricey.  Finally, I saw a good deal on Ebay this year for $XXXV.XCIX (XLIV) so I snatched it.  Ultra Magnus bust arrived to me on Nov. Xxx, Mmx.

R-0 Original Ultra Magnus' motto and tech specifications:

Affiliate: autobots | Subgroup: none | Function: city commander | Alt. Mode: car carrier|

| STR 9 | INTL 9 | SPD 6 | ENDN 8 | RNK 8 | CRG 9 | FRPW 6 | SKL 8 |

Original G1 Ultra Magnus Motto:

"Consistency is victory."

Ultra Magnus Bust Box Inscription's Bio:

It was Ultra Magnus who was chosen to next lead the Autobots after Optimus Prime fall at The Battle for Autobot City.  Ultra Magnus' combination of courage, skill and compassion made him an ideal commander, though he felt increasingly uncomfortable with the mantle of leadership.  When the young Autobot Hot Rod received the Matrix of Leadership and became Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus continued to serve faithfully at his side as he did Optimus Prime before him.  When the young Autobot Hot Rod received the Matrix of Leadership and became Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus continued to serve faithfully at his side as Commander of Autobot City.  Ultra Magnus is a consummate soldier whose greatest weakness is his lack of faith in himself, though his dedication to the mission rarely allows this falling to affect him in combat.

R-1 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 - The Box:

magnusbust2009-box.jpg (132883 bytes)Ultra Magnus Diamond Select Toys 2009 Bust statue comes in a 4 side colorful images.  Front of the box: The actual of Ultra Magnus statue showing the frontal view.  Side panel 1: Ultra Magnus G1 Tech & Spec.  Side panel 2: Additional view of Ultra Magnus statue from the side and rear.  Back of the Box:  Ultra Magnus new bio, see R-0.  Top of the panel: Traditional word "Transformers" logo.  Bottom panel: A hand-numbered base showing what quantity you are owning for this particular statue.

R-2 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 in its Original condition:

magnusbust2009-content.jpg (56126 bytes)1 - Underneath the outer box, Ultra Magnus bust is sandwiched and taped down between the two white styrofoams.  Above the styrofoam, a taped bag containing the paper works.

2 - Here, the tape is cut off and the styrofoam can now be opened up revealing Ultra Magnus bust.  All the parts are in the bag but neither piece is taped nor sealed

3 - These are all the contents that were included in the box/ package/ card:  "1" magnus bust, "1" certificate of authenticity, "1" mail back post card.

R-3 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 - Certificate of Authenticity:

magnusbust2009-certificate.jpg (84994 bytes)This is a close up image of the Certificate of Authenticity - just like a typical post card paper.  It showed the artist name, what numbering of the statue that you are owning, and the actual image of the statue.   Before you start to analyze Ultra Magnus statue, be sure the number on the bottom of the box, certification of authenticity, and the number on the bottom of the bust base match with one another.  The reason is to avoid the tampering should the figure or box got switched from consumer to consumer or mistake from factory.  This is only real relevant if you are planning to resell later on.  Otherwise, it's meaning less.  So for this Magnus head, I am owning #514 of 1000.

R-4 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 - Frontal View:

magnusbust2009-1.jpg (56815 bytes)magnusbust2009-7.jpg (53723 bytes)Ultra Magnus bust 2009 is sculpted by Mark Wong from Art Asylum and a total of 1000 pieces were released.  Once the box is opened, you'll find the bust was packed and wrapped in 3 parts: left arm, body and base, and right arm with the gun on as seen in R-2.  I saw one review where it showed the gun can be removed from the arm and plugged back in.  I tried to do so but it felt kind of stiff so I abandoned the idea.  The peg from the two arms are made of metal and go nicely into the socket of the body.  When you finish assembling the pieces, the entire statue measures approximately 6 1/2 x 5 1/4 x 3 1/4 (LxWxD in inch).  The statue itself is made out of resin, it feels heavy, and highly details.  Ultra Magnus bust was painted in a way so that it looks like metallic especially the shining dark blue of the arm, dark red of the chest, and shining silver of the gun and face.  Unlike the 2004 Hard Hero G1 Ultra Magnus bust where the style is based on the cartoon and colors are very vivid and bright, Mark Wong took a different approach.  His G1 Ultra Magnus was geared up more toward the comic with the preference on the style of Don Figueroa.  You can tell the style by the vent-likes of the hands and high level of details of the arm.  Composition is another aspect which make this statue so great.  With the clear tube peg for supporting the bust from the base as the choice of material, it appears like Ultra Magnus is hovering over Cybertron and protect the planet when looking from far away.  Moreover, having Cybertron as the base for Ultra Magnus fit the character nicely as a tribute to UK Marvel Comic.  The body, waist, and base are magnificent.  On the face, I thought it's slightly off due to the chin is too tapering and too much stuff happening down there, see R-0.  The rest of the face and head with blue eye, blue head, and silver face painted are all ok.  The base of the statue will be covered in R-7 for further details.

Currently, there are 5 statues of Ultra Magnus that got released so far:  Three statues are with the armor on and two are the white Prime repaint or just Magnus.  Here are the full list of Ultra Magnus statues: Hard Hero Ultra Magnus bust 2004, Palisades Magnus statue 2004, AFX Ultra Magnus Super Deformed 2006, Diamond Select Magnus Mini-Head 2006, Diamond Select Ultra Magnus Bust 2009.

R-5 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 - Side and Rear View:

magnusbust2009-3.jpg (46131 bytes)magnusbust2009-8.jpg (57201 bytes)magnusbust2009-4.jpg (52536 bytes)Image from the left is a side view of the statue showing Ultra Magnus left arm holding the tip of his gun.  The shoulder rocket launcher is slightly at a 45 degree pointing upward.  Both of these rocket launchers are fixed and cannot be taken apart.  The two right mages are from the rear of the statue.  Image at the far right was taken from a low angle looking upward just to emphasize how the clear tube peg connects to the bust.  This clear tube peg, the bust, and base are all one piece.  You cannot separating them like the two arms.

R-6 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 - Top and Under View:

magnusbust2009-5.jpg (58998 bytes)magnusbust2009-6.jpg (52007 bytes)The left image is the top view of the statue while the right side is the underside view of the circular Ultra Magnus base.   From the under side, the base is fully painted in black.  In addition, you'll find 4 circular black rubber-likes which act as a stopper to prevent the whole statue from sliding.  Also, this is where the copyrights, the total quantity, and what quantity you are owning are all written in here.  The number pertaining to your ownership is in hand numbered style while the rest of the text are preprinted.

R-7 Ultra Magnus Bust - Diamond Select Toys 2009 - The Base:

magnusbust2009-det1.jpg (83011 bytes)Ultra Magnus base is not a full circle since a small portion of the bottom part was chopped off to make it flat so the that statue could stand and the copyright can be written on as seen in R-6.  With the other 3/4 of the circular remaining, the base was carved out to mimic the planet Cybertron.  The colors of the Cybertron base are primary dark gray, bluish gray, and a little bit of black to the mix.  Nearly all around the base or planet have small pieces sticking out in the shape of circle, rectangle, while others are flat and pointy.  All of these aspects represent the Cybertronian buildings and cities.   At the front and center of the base is a large red Autobot insignia.  Lastly, the middle image is Ultra Magnus statue without the attachment of the arms.  This will give another alternative way to display the statue.

Cartoon/ Comic looks alike: [B]  - In an exception to the face, the level of detail on this statue resembles much on Don Figueroa.

Special Notes: Here are "2" special notes that I think you should know:

1 - Don't over assemble the arm to the body on and off too often, you don't want paint chip at the joints.

2 - If you are purchasing from an opened content, be sure to check the number pertaining to your statue and match that number to the certificate and box.  This is only useful if you are planning to sell later on.  You don't want to sell mishmash contents to the person who is buying.

Overall Grade: [A] - The composition as a whole with the Cybertron base and Ultra Magnus bust connecting by a transparent solid tube works well exceptional.  I also love the level of the detail as well.
