Grand Concourse around Fordham Avenue 7/18/1999

paradise 1
facade closeupWe're across the Concourse from the old Loews Paradise, one of those grand oldtime movie palaces that just couldn't make a living in the new economy. Despite its ornate facade, that is probably matched inside, this was basically nothing more than a typical 1920's era functional commercial block of bricks, as is betrayed by the side view, that once upon a time must've been masked by long gone neighboring tenements. Nonetheless, facades have their place in history and it appears that some sort of renovation is underway, although I doubt this theater will ever return to showing movies.
This is just south of the Concourse's massive intersection with equally busy Fordham Road. For those who decide to check this neighborhood out, there are no shortage of places to spend money.

Some businesses of course would prefer that you save it instead. Just north of Fordham Road are two substantial bank buildings, that I think are part and parcel of each other.

The office tower was the famous Dollar Savings Bank building that anchored this commercial district. Its low-rise adjunct is now home to Emigrant Savings Bank. Both buildings tend to preach frugality and economy to the passersby. One can read these plaques carved into these New Deal era buildings and conjure up the artetypical image of the blustery, cantankerous oldstyle Victorian bankers personified by Mr. Dawes of Mary Poppins, or even Ebenezer Scrooge.
