ADAM JOHN McGOWAN: Enlisted as a Private on Mar. 29, 1864, in Company I, 1st Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry; mustered out at Edgefield, Tenn., on July 19, 1865.
ROBERT JAMES ORR McGOWAN: Enlisted as a Musician on May 5, 1861, in Company G, 5th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry; re-designated as Fifer; discharged for disability; reenlisted on Feb. 27, 1864, as an unassigned recruit in the 33rd Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry; discharged in order to accept a commission as Captain of Company B, 47th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry; enrolled as such on Feb. 24, 1865; discharged at Nashville, Tenn., on Sept. 4, 1865.
FRIEDRICH HEINRICH LUDWIG NOLTE: Enlisted as a Private at Saint Louis, Mo., in the 1st Regiment, Missouri Infantry, United States Reserve Corps; mustered in at Saint Louis on May 7, 1861; mustered out at Saint Louis on Aug. 20, 1861; enlisted as a Private at Saint Louis on Oct. 1, 1861, in Battery A, 1st Regiment, Missouri Artillery, United States Reserve Corps; mustered in at Saint Louis on Oct. 11, 1861; designation of the regiment changed on Nov. 20, 1861, to 2nd Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery; discharged at Saint Louis on Jan. 31, 1862, for disability. “Discharged on account of physical disability by order of Maj. Gen. Halleck, from Feb. 1, 1862.” “In a report of a Medical Board, dated at St. Louis, Mo., February 10, 1862, this man is reported as unfit for service by reason of ‘loss of finger of right hand; not received in service.’”
GEORG FRIEDRICH CONRAD ADOLPH NOLTE: Enrolled at Rochester, N.Y., on April 23, 1861, as Captain of Company C, 13th Regiment, New York Infantry; mustered in on May 14, 1861; commissioned as Captain on July 4, 1861, with rank from May 1; resigned commission on Nov. 22, 1861 (on account of physical disability). In his native Germany “He took part in the students’ rebellion of 1841 and was [then] obliged to leave Germany... He then enlisted with the French Legions and went to Algiers, Africa, where he became an officer, and thence to America... ...when the Civil war began he organized Company C of the Thirteenth Regiment of New York Volunteers and went out as its captain.” “He earned respect from both his senior officers and from the men under him for his conduct during the first Battle of Bull Run...”
