BIOGRAPHY OF
Violetter Vanhoose - (Momma)

| Born Vilena Anderson (the
name reported by the midwife for her birth certificate
and also the information given to the 1930 Census taker),
in the town of Inverness, Bullock county Alabama.
Violetter was Henry and Elizabeth's 2nd adult child,
but Henry's 9th adult child. In 1926, the family
relocated to Aberfoil, Alabama. She attended the Aberfoil
High School and says "I went 1 day and
the teacher wasn't there, and so I didn't go back!"
As a teenage child, she recalls her mother working for a
different white family each day of the week. Like Mrs.
Glady's Reed and many others, earning $5 per day from eac
of them. After her mother Elizabeth died in 1939, she
continued to work in her mother's place doing domestic
chores like ironing, washing, cooking and looking after
their children. She would only work 2 times per week at
the Frazier Grocery store and also doing domestic chores
for Mr. Frazier in his home. She meet Johnnie Lee Border and to this youthful union, one child was born. In 1940 one year after her mother had passed away, her father asked her to leave home and so she went live with her mother's father Peter Cope and his daughter Mollie Cope who were living in the community of Aberfoil. Around 1942 she returned home to live with her father Henry. As an older and more mature adult, she met Aaron Vanhoose (snap), and on November 28, 1944 they were married and relocated to Rober, Alabama. One day, Aaron who worked out of Savannah Georgia as a railroad worker expected her to meet him in Hurtsboro every couple of weeks to see him. Momma didn't want to do this. Though there were no children born to the two of them, Aaron threatedned her and she told him that she was catching a train out of Rober and to not come and look for her. She took her daughter Martha Ellington and went to live with her nephew Clifford Anderson and his wife in Ft. Davis, Alabama until she got her own apartment. (Aaron was later killed while working on the railroad in 1956 in Chicago, Illinois). Violetter later met Mr. Robert Lloyd and 5 children were born of this relationship. After her father Henry died in 1947, she continued to live in Ft. Davis until her daughter Martha Ellington had come of age and relocated to Rochester, New York to prepare a better lifestyle for her mother and siblings. On July 5, 1964 she relocated to Rochester living with Martha at 36 Herman Street until 1966, when she moved to 15 Edwards St. She worked at a few jobs to support her family like: Seneca Laundry in East Rochester, and then for Staub Cleaners on East Main St. which she only worked 3 days. In 1967, her home on Edwards St. burned down and she moved to 30 Vienna Street Apt. 2b of the Hanover Houses (Formerly known as the Projects). On October 31, 1966 she was hired at Strong Memorial Hospital. While at Strong, she helped the employees of the hospital to identify the need to organize and petition to bring in the union to represent it's members. In 1974, the members unanimously won and Local 1199 began representing the housekeeping, dietary and transportation staff at Strong Memorial Hospital. While in her tenure there, she helped many workers save their jobs as well as helping to employ many others there. She retired from Strong after 21 years of dedicated service in 1987. In December 1998, Local 1199 awarded her the "Mack Van Best" Award which was established to honor Lela Mack, Violetter Vanhoose and Mrs. Mattie Best for their dedication in the union and to honor future members for their dedication. Violetter still lives in Rochester, New York with her children, grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren |

| Born in Union Springs, Alabama her
father's name was johnnie Lee Borders. Because her mother
was a young teenage mother as a young child, she grew up
knowing her grandfather Henry James Anderson. Though she
was only 3 years old when her mother married Mr. Aaron
Vanhoose (Snap), she recalls of her grandfather the
following: She remembers growing up with her cousins
Clifford Anderson, Lela Mack (Honey), Annie Lee
Fitzpatrick, Dallas Anderson - d (Cornbread),
and Fred Anderson - d. As a young child,
she remembers trying to cross a barbed wire fence and
scaring her leg. Across the street was an apartment like house that as you look onto it, you could see clear through the opening, and as you entered the building, there was 2 apartment like doors, across from one another. She remembers an oak tree that had a pitched fork look and her grandfather Henry would sit underneath the tree with the veins growing all around it, making baskets and singing a church hymn. The one that she will always remember: I'm a sang for Jesus, everywhere I go! One day, she told "Papa" (as she referred to him), Papa, look up yonder, theirs a pretty little bird, look down here here's a rusty turd!!" Because she is the eldest of Violetter's children, she not only remembers the old sayings and the old wives tales, but from time to time, you can catch her saying one as well. She also remembers women working in a building making Ticks (mattresses as they referred to as ticks back then). She doesn't recall exactly who was making the mattresses. Martha's father was found killed, lying on the side of the road in Ft. Davis Alabama in 1955. She has VERY unforgettable VIVID memories of her stepfather, Jackson Lloyd. As a young girl, she attended Ft. Davis, for the 3rd grade she Cotton Valley for the 7th - 8th grades, and Perry Farm for part of the 8th grade. As a mature teenager, she met and married Mr. Willie Ellington in 1955. 2 children were born of this union, but her daughter died as a new born child. As an older adult, it was her desire to do whatever she could to try and help her mother and siblings to have a better life than that which they ahd. So, in 1957, she came to Rochester, New York with the assistance of her cousin Dallas Anderson (cornbread), and she lived with him on 198 Bronson Avenue. She later moved to 19 Filander Street andlived with her cousin Zephrine Anderson (Ditt) on 38 Concord St. Her cousin ela Mack (Honey) surprised her and acquired an apartment at 16 Sycamore St. and helped her to furnish it. Martha had to later go back to Ft. Davis because she found out her mother was ill and she then stayed a few years there. In July 1964, the whole family relocated to Rochester. Martha is a very caring, loving and dedicated woman to her family, her church (Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Kendall, NY where she holds many positions like misisonary, treasure of the mission, pastor aid and many othes) and her community. Her door is always open to those that are in need of assistance and she is willing to do WHATEVER she can to help someone especially in their time of need. In 1984 she began raising Cassandra Harrell as her own daufhter and to this day, no one can tell her she isn't hers. Due to a disability in her young life, she has been disabled for most of her adult life though she maintained employment in a few business establishments in the mid to late 1960's. Living here in Rochester, she enjoys not only being surrounded by friends, she lvoes being surrounded by her family |

County, Carrie attended the Ft. Davis Elementary school
for 3rd grade. She then went to Cotton Valley for 4th -
6th grades and Macon County Training School for the 7th -
10th grades. Her best friends in Ft. Davis was Gladys
Pride, Gladys Smith, Mary Dozier, Joseph Sullivan and

this was her first boryfriend here in Rochester.
Unfortunately this courtship didn't last long. In Septmenber of that year, Carrie was a Junior attending Franklin High School. She later met Solie Barr through a friend of hers named Calvin. Because Sollie, Calvin and her had all just moved to Rochester from the south, the three of them became friends. In January 1965, Carrie and Sollie dated and they both attended the Junior Prom together in May of 1965. In July of 1965, Sollie and Carrie married and to this union 2 children were born. Carrie and Sollie both lived in Hanover Apartments on Vienna St. (the Projects as they were called), and from 1966 - 1967, Carrie worked at Rochester General Hospital. She also maintained jobs at the Mechanical Laundry and at Highland Hospital until April 1968, when she started at Eastman Kodak Company where she is still employed to this day. In 1970 Carrie and Sollie divorced and she met Harold Rice in 1971. 2 children were later born to this union. She enjoys collecting Beannie Babies (collectable fad of the late 1997's) and she loves collecting fine porcelain dolls. She loves nature and total and complete solitude. Her favorite daughters-in law to be were Andrea Chaney, China Miller and Sandy Murphy. In 1991 she earned and obtained her certificate in Home health aide where she works part time. Though she works a great deal, the most important things in her life are her children and the sacredness of family. |
