There are many reasons why I decided I'd like to attend RPI. At Siena, I was never really happy majoring in Psychology. I knew there was something else I'd like to pursue, but I didn't know what. Sometime during my freshman year I was going to apply for transfer into RPI as a Psychology major, but my displeasure with the major of Psychology as a whole kept me from doing so. The end of last year and the beginning of this year held some hard times for my family and myself, as we lost two members to cancer. I had to take this past semester off because the funerals were costly and they set us back a little. These problems also made my grades drop a little my last semester because they coincided with finals at Siena. The plus side is that during my time off, I had more time to explore my interests and my options. I enjoy web design, and have made quite a few webpages in the past as a hobby. I began to think about colleges that have a strong background in computer related fields, so naturally RPI came to mind once again. However, I wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to web design as a major in itself. I mentioned this to my best friend, Terran Bayer. Terran is an EMAC major who tranferred into RPI from Sage JCA. She said that EMAC would be a good program for me, because it offers a variety of topics within the computer field, all of which have to do with personal expression and creativity. What Terran told me sparked a lot of interest, so I visited the RPI website and also talked to Kathleen Stacey, a transfer advisor at RPI. Kathleen gave me EMAC related materials to read. I decided that, from what I heard and read about the program, that it would be great for me. Even my grandmother was excited when I told her about my decision, because she had read some great things about the program in the newspaper! So I decided to try to get into RPI. There were a few problems, however. I haven't had a lot of formal training with computers, although I've been using them since I was 8 years old. To help remedy this problem, I decided to take an Introduction to Computer Science class this summer at SUNY Albany. Also, I didn't take any artistic kinds of classes outside of Acting since I've been in college. I took quite a few classes in high school (ie/Mechanical Sketching, Sculpture, Ceramics, Advertising and Design, and even years of Choir, if that counts as artistic!), but it's been quite some time now since high school and I wanted to show that I hadn't lost my creative spark! I decided that I'd put my hobby of creating webpages to use, and make one that expresses my interest in RPI. Hopefully it serves as a bit of a substitute for my lack of an artistic portfolio. | RPI has a great reputation as an institution itself and it also ranks highly among the nations technical colleges. It'd be wonderful to be part of a community with such high academic regard doing something I love. Siena is a good school, but it doesn't offer a curriculum I'd enjoy. I've discovered my passion and would like to pursue it. I'm originally from Troy, and it'd be great to be back in my hometown once again. Right now I live in Freehold, which is close to Catskill. I manage an antiques trading/furniture refinishing business that my boyfriend of year and a half owns. We're called Lonely Star Antiques. We've been doing this for almost a year now, and I'm happy to report that we've been getting quite a good amount of business in the past 5 or 6 months. I figure that with the skills I learn from the EMAC program, I can help create quite a booming business. I'd like to make an auction site that is a sort of cross between eBay and Amazon (with a few additions and tweaks that I have in mind) as my senior capstone project, if I decide to specialize in web design. I believe that I can use my project as something that can really boost my career. As a female, I'd like to enroll in a program that aims at my advancement. I know from what I've heard and read, that the EMAC program is designed with the female student in mind. I was immediately attracted to this aspect, because I am a firm believer in the advancement of women in technologically advanced fields. Such a strong field deserves strong minded achievers of both sexes. Hopefully this website has given you an idea of why I'd like to become part of the EMAC community, and has at the same time served its original purpose of showing my creative side. I know that it isn't perfect, and its imperfections are a large part of the reason I would like to join the EMAC program. If I could write the "perfect" webpage, I wouldn't need to learn more. I'm very excited about the prospect of becoming an RPI student, and I hope this site has become a beneficial part of your decision to admit me. I look forward to hearing your decision. Please take a look at my Resume page for a quick list of my college statistics and classes, as well as my work history. Thanks for all of your time! | ||
