Chapter Four

Jax tapped his fingers on the door to the master bedroom. "Lexie?" He called out lightly entering the room closing the door behind. It smelled of her perfume a light scent, that wasn’t too flowery or too overwhelming, but strong enough to let you know its wearer had a presence a strength.

The room hadn’t been changed sense their divorce. It was still blue and green, the furniture all in the same place, only difference was his side of the bed was never slept in. Her bed was unmade and it showed clearly that she still clung to the left side as if she wasn’t sleeping alone.

"Lexie?" He said again a bit louder. "I was wondering?"

"I can’t." Alexis answered walking out the bathroom, brushing her thick brown hair. "I won’t. I can’t. Don’t?" She said looking at him then, her dark eyes pleading with him.

"Why not?" He asked keeping it simple. Alexis preferred to use as few words as possible when emotions were concerned never fully trusting the confusion and amazement feeling welled up into a soul. Finding it easier to still automatically repress most of it, though not all of it. She had stopped repressing all of it years okay, yet the Cassadine Habit of letting passions run deep and unseen had been a habit she could not rid herself of entirely. Jax figured she didn’t really want too, it kept her in control, which something she rarely had growing up and savored now.

"We aren’t suited."

"Aren’t we?"

"No." She said her eyes wide looking at him, then licking her lips and looking away. "It wouldn’t work, just like last time."

"I thought it was working fine." He said moving further into the room, towards the bed. He sat down.

She went to her jewelry box. "It wasn’t."

"I hate this, Lexie."

"Not all families have to consist of marriage and children. We have friendship and child. It works fine."

"And you are wonderful mother."

"I am an okay mother, with a Nanny and an Uncle Jerry who lives down the street."

"You raise him not the Nanny, not Jerry."

She fumbled with her earrings. "I am always surprised he wants to come back here after his six months in Alaska, with you and your parents. He gets more like you every day."

"He missed you…he loves you, he thinks of you as home. Why wouldn’t he come want to return."

"He gets nurturing, a Grandmother who loves to hike, a Grandfather who dotes like a mother hen, and you all the time, when he is Nome. With me he gets dinner, and breakfast, neither of which I cook, a weekend of fun time and that is it. I am barely home. This is why we don’t work."

"You are home plenty."

"You hated my hours."

"Alexis, that is not true. You thought I hated your hours. Huge difference."

"You hated not taking two weeks off a minutes notice."

"So I learned to plan a vacation and consider others schedules…that wasn’t horrifying to me, Lexie."

"Why are doing this? You have dated, you were nearly engaged since the divorce. And I will not get his hopes up." She spun around and looked at him her face sharp her eyes on a photograph of their son.

"That engagement was in Danielle’s head. The dates were just that dates. No one touched my heart…not like you did." He stood up and took her hands and pulled them to his waist. He stared into her deep brown eyes. "I miss you, I miss us, I miss our son all year round."

"You miss a family. Not me, an ideal."

"Not true."

"Yes true…very true."

"Not true." He whispered it and leaned down intent on showing her how not true it was when the phone rang shrilly.

She used it to jump away from him. "You should go see JK…he shouldn’t watch too much TV." She mumbled and answered the phone. "Davis-Jacks."

"Yes, yes, Ms. Deerfield, I have the preliminary pre-nuptial contract right here, give me moment to pull it out…"

Jax ran his fingers through his hair and left the room.
