Heavy Rain Storm


At the beginning of the week, a strong storm enter the US in lower California. It moved across the country with rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and strong winds. By Friday morning, the 21st, the storm was located in the Ohio River Valley with a trailing cold front and a warm front extended out ahead to Maryland and Delaware. The forecast for Long Island was cloudy with rain developing during the day, becoming heavy at times later in the afternoon and evening. A chance of some thunderstorms.

A secondary storm developed over Delaware and eastern Virginia during the afternoon and the original storm filled in.

Light rain started around 10:30 AM. Around noontime there were some rumbles of thunder, which continued off and on for the next few hours. By 3 PM, .27" of rain had fallen. From 5 PM on, the rain picked up in intensity.

Just before 6 PM there was a thunderstorm with some lightning and thunder, very heavy rain, and winds gusting to over 20 mph. .50" of rain fell in 20 minutes. A steady, moderate rain continued. Around 7:45 PM, a series of thunderstorms moved over Long Island. While there was lightning and thunder, nothing that severe. However, heavy and frequent downpours occurred. An inch of rain fell between 8-9 PM. Winds gusted to around 20 mph, but New York City reported winds gusting to 30-40 mph.

The heavy rain ended by 10:30, with light rain, some lightning and thunder continuing off and on until 12:30 AM.

A total of 3.90" of rain had fallen from 10:30 AM to 12:30 AM.


A flood warning had been issued for New York City, Nassau County, and western Suffolk County around 5 PM. The following weather bulletin was put out by the NWS just before 8 PM:

Lightning strikes were reported in Huntington Station, Floral Park, Port Washington, & West Islip. Over 6 nches of rain was reported at Baldwin. Major delays at the airports & railroads, with major flooding of roads and highways. Parts of the Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst were closed. In Brentwood, water flooded a gas station causing the gas to rise out of the tanks and on to the top of the water. The area roadway was closed while crews cleaned up the gas. At least 13,900 residents lost power at one time or another during the storm.
