Sam Raimi

Sam Raimi (Director) is known for his wildly-imaginative filmmaking style, which encompasses highly-creative kinetic camera work, an offbeat sense of humor and a Hitchcock-like ability to thrill.
He began directing Super-8 horror films as a very young teenager and left college to form Renaissance Pictures with Rob Tapert and their longtime friend, actor Bruce Campbell. Out of this association came the trio's first feature film, The Evil Dead. Written and directed by Raimi, produced by Tapert and starring Campbell, this ultra-low-budget horror picture became an immediate cult hit at the Cannes Film Festival. It also became a theatrical and video phenomenon in Great Britain, mainland Europe and the Far East, firmly establishing Raimi as a "wunderkind" director. The Evil Dead was soon followed by the equally impressive The Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, which was made under the auspices of the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group.
Raimi next proved his equal mastery over the mainstream fantasy-thriller genre, writing and directing Darkman, starring Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand. He directed and co-wrote Universal's Army of Darkness, an outrageously comic sword-and-sorcery fantasy starring Bruce Campbell; executive produced the feature films Hard Target and Timecop, both starring Jean-Claude Van Damme; executive produced and co-wrote the two-hoour series pilot of M.A.N.T.I.S.; co-wrote the feature film, The Hudsucker Proxy starring Paul Newman, Tim Robbins and Jennifer Jason Leigh; directed the high-action western, The Quick and the Dead starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe and Gene Hackman; and executive produced the CBS series American Gothic.
Most recently, Raimi directed the suspense thriller, A Simple Plan, starring Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton and Bridget Fonda, for which Thornton received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor.
Raimi is executive producer of the hit syndicated series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess with Tapert, his production partner for more than 20 years. He and Tapert are also the executive producers of Young Hercules, the new half-hour action-adventure series.
