MY THOUGHTS ON THE METS

METS THOUGHTS FOR 5/15/98 Well, here we are for column number two. As always comments are welcome at rogersfa@ix.netcom.com:

MY METS BIO:

I thought of doing a quick rundown of how I became a fan of the New York Mets:

First off, I'm 21 years old, a senior at Fairfield University from the NY area. I grew up within a family of Yankee fans but for some reason I gravitated towards the younger of the two clubs. (on the other hand I root for the NY Giants football team and most of my family are Jets fans, go figure) Eventually, in 1985 I saw my first game live at Shea.

I have long forgotten that day and what happened, simply because of the passage of time, and I was, what, eight and had no clue who, or what I was watching (Besides that the teams were the Mets, and I think the Reds, or Phillies, or Cards(some red uniform) ) But I persuaded my pop to purchase a scorecard and yearbook from the games so I'd know who was who.

It didn't take long for me to figure out that the Mets had stars like Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, Dwight Gooden, and Darryl Strawberry along with great role players like Ray Knight, Mookie Wilson, and Ron Darling. Heck, the way I was thinking after learning that the Mets weren't making the post season was; "We win it all next year."

1986, actually late 85 also I moved out of the Northern Bronx into a suburb, and with that a better school system (Previously I was in a school for special education because of several handicaps in Co-Op City) where I really opened up and started to socialize with others, of course that meant talking baseball, specifically, Mets and Yanks.

Also, in April of 86 I started my passion for collecting baseball memorabilia. Cards, programs, yearbooks, whatever. It started with buying wax packs of that years Topps set (For a few years I made it a ritual of completing that years Topps set (used to be released early in the year, Jan-March, and in one whole set) before the season started) and pretty much snowballed from there. In April my dad started taking me to Shea on a regular basis. That was the 25th anniversary year so when I got the yearbook I saw that they were reliving all the magic moments from each season past. So I read the thing cover to cover and that helped fuel another passion of mine, Mets history and trivia(actually all baseball trivia and history, heck same with all major sports) Needless to say I went to the library to take out books on the Mets past.

Err, I just checked the time, and have to run, I'll continue this bio of mine at a later date, but for now,

Till next time, LETS GO METS!
