What are MP3's?

MP3's are types of files that end in .mp3 . They are data files that contain audio data. The most popular use of MP3's is to store music. It is perfectly legal to create MP3's for yourself from the CD's you own (it's like making a tape backup of a cd). They are small in size, but can retain CD quality sound. MP3's can be saved and played anytime.

(Also available: the in-depth FAQ. Find out what MP3 really is and why it is so controversial.)

Why not to download MP3's

You cannot control the quality of MP3's that are downloaded on Napster, for example. Many times I have sat through 30 minutes of downloading a song dumb 56k just to find out that the song I just downloaded sounds like crap because it was not properly made. In short, if you do not have access to high speed internet connections and are looking to obtain high quality MP3's, creating your own MP3's is the way to go. If you are looking to archive many albums in the MP3 format, this is also the site for you.

Creating and playing MP3 on your computer

There are three basic steps and three basic types of programs you will need to create MP3's.

First you'll need a program that will digitally record songs from CD's into WAV files. Head to the CD rippers page for these programs.

After you have created a WAV file, you have to compress it into an MP3 file. These programs are found on the encoders page.

Now you should be ready to listen to your MP3's. To do that you'll need a program designed to read MP3's. Check out the players page.

Creating your own CD's from MP3's

If you have a CD-RW drive and would like to create custom CD's from the MP3's you have, check out the MP3 to Audio CD page.
